{"id":44347,"date":"2019-03-10T06:36:31","date_gmt":"2019-03-10T11:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44347"},"modified":"2019-03-10T06:36:33","modified_gmt":"2019-03-10T11:36:33","slug":"pollution-panic-strikes-us-cities-as-officials-face-consequences-of-chinas-waste-blockade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44347","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Pollution Panic&#8221; Strikes US Cities As Officials Face Consequences of China&#8217;s Waste Blockade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-03-06\/pollution-panic-strikes-us-cities-officials-face-consequences-chinas-waste-blockade\">&#8220;Pollution Panic&#8221; Strikes US Cities As Officials Face Consequences of China&#8217;s Waste Blockade<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning in Feb 2017, as part of China\u2019s broader \u201cNational Sword\u201d campaign,&nbsp;<strong>the largest buyer of recyclables from the US,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.ymaws.com\/wasterecycling.org\/resource\/resmgr\/issue_brief\/nwra_issue_brief_on_changing.pdf\">banned<\/a>&nbsp;24 types of solid waste from being imported and placed tougher restrictions on the ones it continues to accept.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/5c7fc942dda4c8d4788b45b8.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/5c7fc942dda4c8d4788b45b8.jpg?itok=M196dDK3\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The move&nbsp;left&nbsp;the recycling industry and authorities in a number of US cities struggling<\/strong>&nbsp;with the disposal of plastic, paper and glass trash, and as RT reports, US officials say it creates pollution, negatively impacting the health of residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em>\u201cCommunities around trash incinerators have experienced elevated levels of certain cancers,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong>environmental activist Mike Ewall told Ruptly video agency in Chester, outside Philadelphia, where a large incinerator is located.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It burns around 200 tons of recyclable materials every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/2500%20%281%29.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2500%20%281%29.jpg?itok=k_F_26gd\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Ewall noted that&nbsp;<strong>burning trash releases&nbsp;<em>\u201c28 times more dioxin pollution\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;than burning coal, emitting&nbsp;<em>\u201cthe most toxic chemicals known to science,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;like mercury and lead<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The residents complain that the incinerator affects house prices as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em>\u201cIt destroyed the sense of community, because people that were here moved. You cannot sell the house. It has destroyed the foundations,\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>local activist Zulene Mayfield told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/453159-us-china-waste-rules\/\">Ruptly<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/2500.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2500.jpg?itok=msmFXIyk\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, some have suggested Beijing\u2019s move to crack down on waste imports may be part of the ongoing trade war with Washington:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em>\u201cI have to take off my hat to China: it\u2019s a very clever trade move,\u201d<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Jeffrey Tucker, the editorial director at the American Institute for Economic Research, told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/453159-us-china-waste-rules\/\">RT<\/a>, adding that&nbsp;<strong>Beijing&nbsp;<em>\u201cwould never admit that this is part of the trade war.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For some context, U.S.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/5127\/plastic-waste-in-the-united-states\/\">plastic waste<\/a>&nbsp;exports to China plummeted by 92 percent between the first part of 2017 and the first part of 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/17220\/plastic-waste-united-states\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/infographic.statista.com\/normal\/chartoftheday_17220_plastic_waste_united_states_n.jpg\" alt=\"Infographic: China Won't Accept U.S. Plastic Waste.
