{"id":44282,"date":"2019-03-07T11:26:23","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T16:26:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44282"},"modified":"2019-03-07T11:26:26","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T16:26:26","slug":"factcheck-what-greenland-ice-cores-say-about-past-and-present-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44282","title":{"rendered":"Factcheck: What Greenland ice cores say about past and present climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/factcheck-what-greenland-ice-cores-say-about-past-and-present-climate-change\">Factcheck: What Greenland ice cores say about past and present climate change<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A misleading graph purporting to show that past changes in Greenland\u2019s temperatures dwarf modern climate change has been circling the internet since&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2010\/12\/28\/2010-where-does-it-fit-in-the-warmest-year-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at least 2010<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on an early Greenland ice core record produced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/96JC03981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">back in 1997<\/a>, versions of the graph have, variously, mislabeled the x-axis, excluded the modern observational temperature record and conflated a single location in Greenland with the whole world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More recently, researchers have drilled numerous additional ice cores throughout Greenland and produced an updated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature08355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">estimate<\/a>&nbsp;past Greenland temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This modern temperature reconstruction, combined with observational records over the past century, shows that current temperatures in Greenland are warmer than any period in the past 2,000 years. That said, they are likely still cooler than during the early part of the current geological epoch \u2013&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holocene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Holocene<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 which started around 11,000 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, warming is expected to continue in the future as human actions continue to emit greenhouse gases, primarily from the combustion of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/qa-how-do-climate-models-work\">Climate models<\/a>&nbsp;project that if emissions continue, by 2050, Greenland temperatures will exceed anything seen since the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/global-warming\/penultimate-interglacial-period\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last interglacial period<\/a>, around 125,000 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ice cores as climate \u2018proxies\u2019<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Widespread thermometer measurements of temperatures only extend back to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2012\/07\/120730142509.htm\">mid-1700s<\/a>. Scientists investigating how temperatures have changed prior to the invention of thermometers need to rely on a variety of climate \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/news\/what-are-proxy-data\">proxies<\/a>\u201d, which are correlated with temperature and can be used to infer, with some uncertainties, how it has changed in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ice-core-greenland-K5B16Y.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ice-core-greenland-K5B16Y-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"An ice core from Greenland is prepared for cutting at the National Ice Core Laboratory.
