But that doesn&#8217;t mean investors should just ignore the US&#8217;s increasingly provocative &#8220;freedom of navigation&#8221; operations in the contested region that is also a vital chokepoint for one third of global trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Trump reportedly pressures his negotiators to walk away with a deal, the US air force has for the first time since just before Thanksgiving risked a confrontation with Beijing by flying two B-52 bomber on a mission that brought them within close proximity to the Chinese mainland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/Screen%20Shot%202019-03-06%20at%209.42.46%20AM.png\" alt=\"Jets\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/Screen%20Shot%202019-03-06%20at%209.42.46%20AM.png?itok=-bLjP7gh\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;training mission&#8221; brought the bombers close to disputed airspace over the South and East China Seas, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/453119-b52-bombers-disputed-china\/\">RT<\/a>. The mission was part of the US Pacific Command\u2019s &#8220;Continuous Bomber Presence Missions&#8221;, which are designed to act as a means of deterrence against Beijing, which hasn&#8217;t shied away from flexing its growing military presence in the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Two US Air Force B-52H Stratofortress long-range bombers, based in Guam, participated in&nbsp;\u201croutine training missions\u201d&nbsp;on Monday by flying through the disputed airspaces over the South and East China Seas. As one bomber&nbsp;\u201cconducted training in the vicinity of the South China Sea,\u201d&nbsp;the other practiced off the coast of Japan in&nbsp;\u201ccoordination with the US Navy and alongside our Japanese air force,\u201d&nbsp;US Pacific Air Forces&nbsp;said&nbsp;in a statement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The provocation is particularly notable because of Beijing&#8217;s increasingly belligerent rhetoric toward Taiwan, which President Xi pledged earlier this year would soon be &#8220;reunited&#8221; with the mainland, eliciting cries from Taiwan&#8217;s leader that the Taiwanese people would never accept this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bombers reportedly took off from Anderson Air Force Base in Guam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zcctLtOw318\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-10-01\/unsafe-and-unprofessional-chinese-ships-menace-navy-destroyer-near-spratly-islands\">Back in October, a Chinese warship nearly collided with a US destroyer in the South China Sea,&nbsp;<\/a>provoking condemnations from both sides.
