It has been doing the job the U.S. constitution intended the press to do, says Joe Lauria.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I<\/strong>n his 1971 opinion in the Pentagon Papers case, U.S. Supreme Court&nbsp;Justice Hugo Black wrote: \u201cIn the First Amendment the Founding Fathers&nbsp;gave the free press the protection it must have to fulfill its&nbsp;essential role in our democracy. The press was to serve the governed,&nbsp;not the governors. The Government\u2019s power to&nbsp;<em>censor&nbsp;<\/em>the press was&nbsp;abolished so that the press would remain forever free to&nbsp;<em>censure&nbsp;<\/em>the&nbsp;Government.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s what WikiLeaks and Julian Assange have been doing since 2006:&nbsp;censuring governments with governments\u2019 own words pried from secrecy by WikiLeak\u2019s sources\u2014whistleblowers. In other words, WikiLeaks has been doing the job the U.S. constitution intended the press to do.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One can hardly imagine anyone sitting on today\u2019s U.S. Supreme Court&nbsp;writing such an opinion. Even more troubling is the news media having&nbsp;turned its back on its mission. Today they almost always serve the&nbsp;governors\u2014not the governed.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Joe_Lauria-serious-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Joe_Lauria-serious-1-400x225.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33830\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lauria: Media serve governors\u2013not the governed.&nbsp;(Cathy Vogan)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is why.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consolidation of media ownership has increased obedience of desperate&nbsp;journalists; entertainment divisions have taken over news departments; and&nbsp;careerist reporters live vicariously through the power of those they&nbsp;cover, rejecting the press\u2019 unique power to hold those officials to&nbsp;account.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes down ultimately to lifestyles. Men go to war to protect and further&nbsp;their lifestyles.
