{"id":43920,"date":"2019-02-20T09:43:20","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T14:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43920"},"modified":"2019-02-20T09:43:24","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T14:43:24","slug":"our-food-is-killing-the-planet-but-it-doesnt-have-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43920","title":{"rendered":"Our Food Is Killing the Planet \u2014 But It Doesn\u2019t Have To"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/therevelator.org\/food-killing-planet\/\">Our Food Is Killing the Planet \u2014 But It Doesn\u2019t Have To<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A new book asks, \u201cCan we feed the world without destroying it?\u201d The answers might surprise you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world needs to change the way it eats, not just as individuals but as a society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the message from a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/commissions\/EAT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">groundbreaking report<\/a>&nbsp;issued last month by the EAT-<em>Lancet<\/em>&nbsp;Commission, which made a series of societal recommendations to help the world\u2019s ever-increasing human population ensure its food security in the face of global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recommendations are all designed to accommodate a planet that is projected to contain 10 billion people by the year 2050. They include switching to a diet that\u2019s low in meat and sugar but higher in whole grains, fruits and vegetables; cutting food waste; reducing fossil fuel use and emissions; and incentivizing small and medium farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The changes, the report said, would lead to a healthier planet and healthier people, while also helping the more than 820 million people currently suffering from chronic hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coincidentally, the report came out the same week as a challenging new book that makes many of the same recommendations, while also presenting some contrasting and complementary ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/therevelator.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/can-we-feed-the-world.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5863\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/politybooks.com\/bookdetail\/?isbn=9781509522002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Can We Feed the World Without Destroying It?<\/em><\/a>, written by food activist Eric Holt-Gim\u00e9nez and published by Polity Press, we already produce more than enough food to feed everyone on the planet, and we\u2019re gearing up to grow even more to accommodate the projected increase in human population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All that food comes with multiple costs, including climate change, drought, water contamination, habitat loss and species extinctions \u2014 which themselves put the very future of food at risk. Holt- Gim\u00e9nez writes, \u201cour greenhouse-gas-spewing industrial food system has entered a dangerous negative feedback loop.
