Cuba Warns US Moving Special Forces Closer to Venezuela Under Guise of ‘Humanitarian Intervention’<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro urges<\/a> the international community to condemn an ongoing U.S.-backed effort<\/a> to overthrow him and calls for peaceful negotiations with critics led by self-declared<\/a> “Interim President” Juan Guaid\u00f3, the Cuban government\u2014which supports Maduro\u2014claimed<\/a> on Thursday that the Trump administration is moving special forces closer to Venezuela “in preparation for a military adventure under the guise of a ‘humanitarian intervention.'”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a lengthy statement<\/a> denouncing the steps President Donald Trump and his allies have taken to oust Maduro\u2014particularly National Security Advisor John Bolton <\/a>and Republican Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.)<\/a>\u2014the Cuban government said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between February 6 and 10 of 2019, several military transport aircraft have flown to the Rafael Miranda Airport in Puerto Rico, the San Isidro Air Base in the Dominican Republic, and other strategically located Caribbean Islands, most certainly without the knowledge of the governments of those nations. These flights took off from U.S. military facilities where Special Operation Troops and U.S. Marine Corps units operate. These units have been used for covert operations, even against leaders of other countries.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Pointing to a draft resolution that the Trump administration recently introduced at the U.N. Security Council that expresses concern about the humanitarian conditions of Venezuela, Cuba concluded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[T]he U.S. intends to fabricate a humanitarian pretext in order to launch a military attack on Venezuela and, by resorting to intimidation, pressure, and force, is seeking to introduce into this sovereign nation’s territory alleged humanitarian aid… <\/p>\n\n\n\n
