{"id":43751,"date":"2019-02-12T10:23:33","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T15:23:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43751"},"modified":"2019-02-12T10:23:35","modified_gmt":"2019-02-12T15:23:35","slug":"climate-change-is-killing-off-earths-little-creatures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43751","title":{"rendered":"Climate change is killing off Earth\u2019s little creatures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/climate-change-is-killing-off-earths-little-creatures-109719\">Climate change is killing off Earth\u2019s little\u00a0creatures<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change gets blamed for a lot of things these days: inundating small islands, fueling&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/11\/27\/climate\/wildfire-global-warming.html?mtrref=news.google.com&amp;gwh=1949EE6BAE857F36B16E42F6FD4D631A&amp;gwt=pay\">catastrophic fires<\/a>, amping-up hurricanes and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/11\/27\/climate\/wildfire-global-warming.html?mtrref=news.google.com&amp;gwh=1949EE6BAE857F36B16E42F6FD4D631A&amp;gwt=pay\">smashing Arctic sea ice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0006320718313636\">global review of insect research<\/a>\u00a0has found another casualty: 40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered. It confirms what many have been suspecting: in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-02-24\/decline-in-insect-population-baffles-scientists\/9481136\">Australia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ensia.com\/features\/insects-decline-armageddon-biodiversity\/\">around the world<\/a>, arthropods \u2013 which include insects, spiders, centipedes and the like \u2014 appear to be in trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The global review comes hard on the heels of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/115\/44\/E10397\">research<\/a>&nbsp;published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA that suggests a potent link between intensifying heat waves and stunning declines in the abundance of arthropods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that study\u2019s findings are broadly valid \u2013 something still far from certain \u2013 it has chilling implications for global biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/254021\/original\/file-20190116-152980-1jfo5ft.jpeg?ixlib=rb-1.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Our natural world depends on arthropods.&nbsp;Steve Raubenstine\/Pixabay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arthropod Armageddon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the mid-1970s, researchers on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico conducted a large-scale study to measure the total biomass (living mass) of insects and other arthropods in the island\u2019s intact rainforests, using sweep nets and sticky-traps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four decades later, another research team returned to the island and repeated the study using identical methods and the same locations. To their surprise, they found that arthropod biomass was just one-eighth to one-sixtieth of that in the 1970s \u2013 a shocking collapse overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the carnage didn\u2019t end there.
