But over a decade into the \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/marcellusdrilling.com\/2016\/03\/fracking-miracle-oil-from-fracked-shale-wells-now-51-of-total\/\" target=\"_blank\">fracking miracle<\/a>,\u201d investors are showing signs they&#8217;re worried that payoff will never come \u2014 and as a result, loans are drying\u00a0up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growth is apparently no longer the answer for the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0natural gas industry, as Matthew Portillo, director of exploration and production research at the investment bank Tudor, Pickering, Holt\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Co., recently\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/drillers-are-easing-off-the-gas-11548597601\" target=\"_blank\">told The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cGrowth is a disease that has plagued the space,\u201d Portillo said. \u201cAnd it needs to be cured before the [natural gas] sector can garner long-term investor&nbsp;interest.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hints that gas investors are no longer happy with growth-at-any-cost abound. For starters, several major natural gas producers have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Natural-Gas\/Shale-Gas-Majors-Succumb-To-Wall-Street-Pressure.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced spending cuts&nbsp;<\/a>for&nbsp;2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/trending\/AzlLWi2mMulsmqC8QuOT6Q2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announcing layoffs&nbsp;<\/a>this January,&nbsp;EQT, the largest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4224590-eqt-americas-1-natural-gas-producer-overlook-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">natural gas producer&nbsp;<\/a>in the U.S.,&nbsp;also promised to decrease spending by 20 percent in&nbsp;2019.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/928536434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.gettyimages.com\/embed\/928536434?et=H-mYwCgqT69HPLuLXJqUxA&amp;tld=com&amp;sig=AdWNJUNXGVckpqwt2WtuOa0ATm3Mrnvvc_HxRAqWZms=&amp;caption=true&amp;ver=2\" width=\"594px\" height=\"396px\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such pledges of newfound fiscal restraint are most likely the result of&nbsp;natural gas producers&#8217;&nbsp;inability to borrow more money at low&nbsp;rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2018\/05\/11\/zirp-interest-rate-federal-policy-funded-fracking-industry-loss\" target=\"_blank\">DeSmog has reported,<\/a>\u00a0the historically low interest rates following the 2008 housing crisis were a major enabler of the free-spending and money-losing attitudes in the shale\u00a0industry.\u00a0Wall Street has funded a decade of oil and gas production via fracking and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2018\/05\/29\/flip-well-fracking-shale-halcon-resources-floyd-wilson\" target=\"_blank\">incentivized production\u00a0<\/a>over profits.
