{"id":43620,"date":"2019-02-08T06:26:35","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T11:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43620"},"modified":"2019-02-08T06:26:38","modified_gmt":"2019-02-08T11:26:38","slug":"eu-going-full-orwell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43620","title":{"rendered":"EU: Going Full Orwell"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatestoneinstitute.org\/13532\/eu-full-orwell\">EU: Going Full Orwell<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The problem is that this professedly noble initiative comes from an organization that has already for several years been censoring free speech in Europe.<\/li><li>The handbook guidelines state that journalists should &#8220;Take care not to further stigmatize terms such as &#8216;Muslim&#8217; or &#8216;Islam&#8217; by associating them with particular acts&#8230; Don&#8217;t allow extremists&#8217; claims about acting &#8216;in the name of Islam&#8217; to stand unchallenged. Highlight&#8230; the diversity of Muslim communities&#8230; where it is necessary and newsworthy to report hateful comments against Muslims, mediate the information.&#8221; In other words, the guidelines ask journalists to disinform the public.<\/li><li>This is the same European Commission that most recently expressed its disapproval of the withdrawal of Austria from the UN&#8217;s &#8220;Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.&#8221; The Compact stipulates that media outlets that do not support the UN&#8217;s migration agenda will not be eligible for public funding. How is that for &#8220;fully respecting Europe&#8217;s fundamental principles of freedom of expression, a free press and pluralism&#8221;?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gatestoneinstitute.org\/pics\/3745.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EU has launched a comprehensive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn1-eeas.fpfis.tech.ec.europa.eu\/cdn\/farfuture\/lpM1X9RnuE28GrR78F7yFA0HtKjii4TzKMvXoSg5Bn0\/mtime:1544008849\/sites\/eeas\/files\/action_plan_against_disinformation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Action Plan against Disinformation<\/a>. Its purpose,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_IP-18-6647_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a recent press release<\/a>&nbsp;from the European Commission, is apparently to &#8220;protect its democratic systems and public debates and in view of the 2019 European elections as well as a number of national and local elections that will be held in Member States by 2020&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June 2018, leaders of EU member states had met in the European Council and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2018\/06\/29\/20180628-euco-conclusions-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">invited<\/a>&nbsp;the European Commission &#8220;to present&#8230; an action plan by December 2018 with specific proposals for a coordinated EU response to the challenge of disinformation&#8230;&#8221; It is this action plan that the Commission&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_IP-18-6647_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">presented<\/a>&nbsp;to the public on December 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Action Plan&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_IP-18-6647_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">focuses on four areas<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Improved detection of disinformation (the European Commission dedicated 5 million euros toward this project and seemingly expects Member states to contribute on a national level, as well).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EU: Going Full Orwell The problem is that this professedly noble initiative comes from an organization that has already for several years been censoring free speech in Europe.
