{"id":43607,"date":"2019-02-07T07:49:34","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T12:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43607"},"modified":"2019-02-07T07:53:26","modified_gmt":"2019-02-07T12:53:26","slug":"trump-administration-drills-down-on-alaskas-arctic-refuge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43607","title":{"rendered":"Trump Administration Drills Down on Alaska\u2019s Arctic Refuge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/therevelator.org\/trump-drilling-alaska-arctic-refuge\/\">Trump Administration Drills Down on Alaska\u2019s Arctic Refuge<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The deeply unpopular plan would benefit a few rich oil companies while threatening people, wildlife and the climate.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration is barreling ahead with plans to drill for oil in Alaska\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/arctic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arctic National Wildlife Refuge<\/a>, the largest refuge in the country and an area of global ecological importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many refer to the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge \u2014 the very place where oil drilling is being planned \u2014 as the \u201cAmerican Serengeti.\u201d A home for grizzly bears, wolves, musk oxen and a host of other species, the area is famous as the birthing ground for the enormous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/Cascade\/index.html?appid=1db433027dd94a928c39b9ab0f2d1b47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Porcupine caribou herd<\/a>, which each spring floods across the refuge\u2019s coastal plain in the tens of thousands, arriving in time to raise newborn calves amid fresh tundra grasses. The coastal plain is also the annual destination for millions of migrating&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/arctic\/birds.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">birds<\/a>, who come from nearly every continent on Earth to raise the next generation of swans, terns and over 200 other species. In late summer these avian visitors disperse to backyards, beaches and wetlands across the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/therevelator.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ANWR-caribou-Steve-Hillebrand-USFWS.jpg\" alt=\"caribou\" class=\"wp-image-5782\"\/><figcaption>Photo: Steve Hillebrand\/USFWS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drilling on the Arctic Refuge has long been&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/climatecommunication.yale.edu\/publications\/americans-oppose-drilling-arctic-national-wildlife-refuge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opposed<\/a>&nbsp;by most Americans. Among the staunchest opponents of drilling are indigenous people in northern Alaska and the Canadian Arctic, whose cultures and diets are entwined with the Porcupine herd. They include the Gwich\u2019in people of northern Alaska, who have lived in the Arctic for millennia and reside alongside the Arctic Refuge. Their name for the coastal plain is&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ourarcticrefuge.org\/about-the-refuge\/the-coastal-plain-the-sacred-place-where-life-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Iizhik Gwats\u2019an Gwandaii Goodlit<\/em>,<\/a>&nbsp;or \u201cthe Sacred Place Where Life Begins,\u201d a name reflecting the shared destiny of the caribou and the people.
