{"id":43373,"date":"2019-01-31T08:26:20","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T13:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43373"},"modified":"2019-01-31T08:26:23","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T13:26:23","slug":"the-70-million-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43373","title":{"rendered":"The $70 Million \u201cInvestment\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericpetersautos.com\/2019\/01\/30\/the-70-million-investment\/\">The $70 Million \u201cInvestment\u201d<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericpetersautos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Porsche-charge1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ericpetersautos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Porsche-charge1-696x348.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric cars continue to cost lots of money \u2013 contrary to the now-forgotten original point of the exercise, which was once upon a time to find a&nbsp;<em>lower-cost<\/em>&nbsp;alternative to gas-powered cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericpetersautos.com\/2019\/01\/30\/the-70-million-investment\/macan-suv-production-as-porsche-ag-plans-for-6-8-billion-profit-by-2025\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ericpetersautos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Porsche-charger1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71788\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s gone away because gas is so cheap that \u2013 even with all the add-on taxes (about a fourth of the cost of each gallon) and the cost of regulatory mandates (such as the ethanol mandate) that have made fuel both more expensive and less efficient than it would otherwise be \u2013 finding a&nbsp;<em>cheaper<\/em>&nbsp;source of energy is going to take something spectacular, and battery power isn\u2019t it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&nbsp; inconvenient truth plus government subsidization of high-performance luxury-sport cars that happen to be battery-powered has perverted the incentives for electric car development away from economy and efficiency, neither of which are even discussed anymore \u2013 as if it doesn\u2019t matter&nbsp;<em>how much<\/em>&nbsp;money is thrown on the EV bonfire, so long as the flames burn brighter and higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which brings us to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonews.com\/dealers\/porsche-dealers-invest-70m-chargers-preparation-taycan-ev\">$70 million \u201cinvestment\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;Porsche is making in so-called \u201cfast\u201d chargers for the almost-here Taycan, the company\u2019s first electric high-performance car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cfast\u201d in quotes to make snarky about the abuse of language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/b42db8b9-7e9a-4be0-805a-a66f5014403c\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericpetersautos.com\/2019\/01\/30\/the-70-million-investment\/porsche-bmw-fast-charge-station_1\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ericpetersautos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Porsche-BMW-Fast-Charge-station_1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71789\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These chargers are indeed faster than charging up an EV via a household outlet \u2013 which takes half a day or overnight, depending on how flat-lined the battery is when you first plug it in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they are still paralytically slow vs. the time it takes to refuel say a 911 with&nbsp;<em>gas<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These \u201cfast\u201d charger are also located at&nbsp;<em>dealerships<\/em>, which means having to go&nbsp;<em>to<\/em>&nbsp;the dealership \u2013 and then wait at the dealership \u2013 while your very quick but very long to get quick again Taycan gradually reboots itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better hope there isn\u2019t a line\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericpetersautos.com\/2019\/01\/30\/the-70-million-investment\/line\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ericpetersautos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/line-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71790\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the many problems no one\u2019s talking about with regard to this electric clusterfuck is&nbsp;<em>recharge stall (or parking spot) throughput<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The $70 Million \u201cInvestment\u201d Electric cars continue to cost lots of money \u2013 contrary to the now-forgotten original point of the exercise, which was once upon a time to find a&nbsp;lower-cost&nbsp;alternative to gas-powered cars.
