Winter is here, and if it is chilly in your neck of the woods, you might be tempted to hunker down and stay indoors until Spring arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winter can really take a toll on our moods, making even the warmest personalities turn as chilly as the air outside.&nbsp;It\u2019s getting dark at 5 pm now, and you might find yourself making excuses to stay inside, bundled up in cozy blankets in front of the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, staying indoors during the colder months won\u2019t do anything to improve your mood or your health \u2013 in fact, research suggests the opposite is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to spend hours outside to reap the benefits. Just a few minutes a day has been proven to improve mood and physical health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, bundle up and get out there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here are six reasons to get outside during winter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sunlight helps your body produce Vitamin D.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On sunny days, go outside and soak up&nbsp;some of the \u201cSunshine Vitamin\u201d \u2013&nbsp;Vitamin D. It is unique in that it is a vitamin AND a hormone your body can make with help from the sun.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/2014\/05\/supplements-taking-many-can-hurt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research<\/a>&nbsp;suggests that low levels of vitamin D are&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/03\/150318145501.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">associated<\/a>&nbsp;with mood disorders and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2014\/12\/141202111148.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitamin D deficiency is not uncommon. Because we spend more time indoors during winter, it can be hard to get enough \u2013 which is why getting some sunlight is so important during the colder months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some vitamin D&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">researchers<\/a>&nbsp;have found that somewhere between 5\u201330 minutes of sun exposure between 10 AM and 3 PM at least twice a week to the face, arms, legs, or back without sunscreen usually leads to sufficient vitamin D synthesis.
