{"id":43224,"date":"2019-01-27T18:02:31","date_gmt":"2019-01-27T23:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43224"},"modified":"2019-01-27T18:02:33","modified_gmt":"2019-01-27T23:02:33","slug":"alberta-is-playing-a-dangerous-game-with-pipeline-ad-campaign%ef%bb%bf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=43224","title":{"rendered":"Alberta Is Playing a Dangerous Game with Pipeline Ad Campaign\ufeff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/Analysis\/2019\/01\/24\/Alberta-Game-Pipeline-Ad-Campaign\/\">Alberta Is Playing a Dangerous Game with Pipeline Ad Campaign<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> anti-BC PR blitz fuels the anger of right-wing groups like the \u2018yellow vests.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/Analysis\/2019\/01\/23\/Alberta-Ads.jpg\" alt=\"Alberta-Ads.jpg\"\/><figcaption>Alberta\u2019s ad campaign, with its complaint of being \u2018held hostage,\u2019 risks unleashing destructive forces.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2019\/01\/15\/Alberta-Spent-23-Million-BC-Enemy-Canada\/\">Tyee investigation<\/a>&nbsp;revealed the expensive details of Alberta Premier Rachel Notley\u2019s national public relations effort to scapegoat British Columbia, including dubious claims of pipeline benefits translated into Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Filipino and Punjabi.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not merely cynical and inaccurate, the campaign to portray Albertans as victims also risks emboldening a growing number of extremist elements&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/yellow-vests-in-canada-bear-no-resemblance-to-protesters-in-france-ambassador-1.4263034\">hijacking<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cyellow vest\u201d protests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alberta government spin doctors apparently decided on a simplistic strategy of framing any opposition to Trans Mountain as \u201cB.C. against Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The behind-the-scenes brain trust also arrived at two other Orwellian platitudes: \u201cIt\u2019s senseless to pit the environment against the economy,\u201d and, \u201cThis is a good thing\u201d \u2014 a slogan that might be dreamed up if Martha Stewart worked for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Burson-Marsteller\">Burson-Marsteller<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not often that the roof is lifted off the sausage-making factory to reveal the political abattoir in operation. Such as they are, the arguments advanced in the national misinformation onslaught include such untruths as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/Opinion\/2018\/02\/23\/Fantasies-Keep-Pipeline-Plans-Alive\/\">mythical<\/a>Asian markets, how expanding exports of unprocessed bitumen are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/keepcanadaworking.ca\/climate-action\">somehow good<\/a>&nbsp;for meeting our climate goals, and the biggest nose-stretcher of all: how much the absence of a pipeline is costing Canadians. Alberta first claimed it was losing $4 million a day in revenue. That became $40 million a day for all Canadians. Wait! Now it\u2019s $80 million.
