Venezuela\u2019s US-Backed Coup Leader Immediately Targets State Oil Company, Requests IMF Money<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Unelected US-backed coup leader Juan Guaid\u00f3 immediately moved to try to restructure Venezuela\u2019s state-owned oil company and seek financing from the neoliberal IMF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The right-wing opposition leader that the United States is trying to undemocratically install as Venezuela\u2019s president immediately set his sights on the country\u2019s state-owned oil company, which he is hoping to restructure and move toward privatization. He is also seeking money from the notorious International Monetary Fund (IMF) to fund his unelected government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 23, US President Donald Trump recognized the little-known, US-educated opposition politician Juan Guaid\u00f3 as the supposed \u201cinterim president\u201d of Venezuela. Within 48 hours, Guaid\u00f3 quickly tried to seize control of Venezuela\u2019s major US-based oil refiner and use its revenue to help bankroll his US-backed coup regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guaid\u00f3 is attempting to fire the directors of Citgo Petroleum, which is owned by Venezuela\u2019s state oil company PDVSA, and seeks to appoint his own new board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reuters described Citgo<\/a> as \u201cVenezuela\u2019s most important foreign asset\u201d; Bloomberg<\/a> calls it \u201cthe crown jewel of PDVSA\u2019s assets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citgo is the largest purchaser of Venezuelan oil, although crippling sanctions<\/a> imposed by the Trump administration have prevented the company from sending revenue to Venezuela, starving the government<\/a> of funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing US officials, the Washington Post\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that the Trump administration\u2019s strategy \u201cis to use the newly declared interim government as a tool to deny Maduro the oil revenue from the United States that provides Venezuela virtually all of its incoming cash.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Move Toward Privatizing Venezuela\u2019s Oil<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venezuela has the world\u2019s largest oil reserves. But leftist presidents Hugo Ch\u00e1vez and Nicol\u00e1s Maduro have over the past two decades resisted attempts by US oil companies to exploit the South American nation\u2019s plentiful natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
