LAST WEEK,<\/u> the New York Times reported that<\/a> the FBI, in 2017, launched an investigation of President Trump \u201cto consider whether the president\u2019s own actions constituted a possible threat to national security\u201d and specifically \u201cwhether he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests.\u201d The story was predictably treated as the latest in an endless line of Beginning-of-the-End<\/a>\u00a0disasters for the Trump presidency, though \u2013 as usual \u2013 this melodrama was accomplished by steadfastly ignoring the now-standard, always-buried paragraph pointing out the boring fact that no actual evidence of guilt\u00a0has yet emerged:<\/p>\n

The lack of any evidence of guilt has never dampened the excitement over Trump\/Russia innuendo, and it certainly did not do so here. Beyond being construed as some sort of vindication for the most deranged version of Manchurian Candidate fantasies<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 because, after all, the FBI would never investigate anyone<\/a> unless they were guilty \u2013 the FBI\u2019s investigation of the President as a national security threat was also treated as some sort of unprecedented event in U.S. history. \u201cThis is, without exception, the worst scandal in the history of the United States,\u201d pronounced NBC News\u2019 resident ex-CIA operative<\/a>, who \u2013 along with a large staple of former security state agents employed by that network \u2013 is now paid to \u201canalyze\u201d and shape the news<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The FBI\u2019s counterintelligence investigation of Trump is far from the first time that the FBI has monitored, surveilled and investigated U.S. elected officials who\u00a0the agency had decided harboerd suspect loyalties and were harming national security. The FBI specialized in such conduct for decades under J. Edgar Hoover, who ran the agency for 48 years and whose name the agency\u2019s Washington headquarters continues to\u00a0feature in its name.<\/p>\n
