Trump gets flak for characterizing the mainstream press as purveyors of Fake News. But what about no news at all?<\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t lack<\/em> of coverage even worse than biased<\/em> coverage?<\/p>\n

Well, how much news have you heard or read about the gilets jaunes<\/em> \u2013 or \u201cyellow vest\u201d \u2013 protests in France? CNN hasn\u2019t got anything on its main page today (Jan. 9). Neither did NBC or CBS. Lots of the usual \u2013 endless \u2013 carpet-chewing coverage of Trump, though. And also of such important stories as \u201cWant to Pay off Your Mortgage? Try Frugal Minimalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

You might think France, a major western European country, coming unglued \u2013 and on the verge of its government outright banning \u201cunauthorized\u201d criticism of its actions \u2013 might at least be\u00a0 . . .\u00a0 well,\u00a0 <\/span>news.<\/p>\n

Instead, nothing.<\/p>\n

Which is very interesting, given what the yellow vests are protesting. This being chiefly the purposely punitive taxes<\/a> on fuel \u2013 diesel especially \u2013 imposed by the French President, Emmanuel Macron. In the name of \u201cclimate change\u201d \u2013 but really in the name of squeezing average Frenchmen (and women) out of their cars. These taxes \u2013 already extortionate and brutally regressive \u2013 were on track to increase the cost of a gallon of fuel to more than $7.<\/p>\n

This brought the French not to their knees \u2013 but to the streets. The yellow vests \u2013 which are reflective jackets every French motorist is required by law to keep in their vehicle, to be worn in the event of an emergency \u2013 were donned for a different kind of emergency.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And Macron buckled. The tax hike has been rescinded<\/a>. But did you read about it?<\/p>\n

Probably not \u2013 unless you went out of your way to look for it. Mainstream press coverage of this effective<\/em> protest has been as scanty as its coverage of the reason for the yellow vest protests \u2013 which by the way continue, notwithstanding Macron\u2019s retreat.<\/p>\n
