and potentially &#8220;catastrophic,&#8221;<\/strong> in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/xerces.org\/2018\/11\/29\/critically-low-monarch-population-in-california\/#\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Monarch butterflies (<em>Danaus plexippus plexippus<\/em>) are the most\u00a0well-known butterflies species in North America.\u00a0The Western Monarch typically migrates to\u00a0California each winter, and researchers\u00a0for the\u00a0conservation group count its population in the state each November.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A ubiquitous sight in gardens, prairies, and natural areas from coast to coast, their arrival in northern states and Canadian provinces is viewed by many as a welcome sign of the change in seasons from spring to summer.<\/p>\n<p>Renowned for their long-distance seasonal migration and spectacular winter gatherings in Mexico and California, the Monarch butterfly population has recently declined to dangerously low levels,&#8221;\u00a0Xerces Society said on their website.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/Monarch%20map%20png.png?itok=GNFWgu6y\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/Monarch%20map%20png.png?itok=GNFWgu6y\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/Monarch%20map%20png.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/Monarch%20map%20png.png?itok=GNFWgu6y 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"325\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"98d50731-ee64-462c-a41a-6611421a4608\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Biologist Emma Pelton, who oversees the November count, told The New York Times that the 2018 count is \u201cpotentially catastrophic\u201d when combined with the 97% collapse\u00a0in the overall Monarch population since the 1980s.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWe think this is a huge wake-up call,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Pelton said, adding that ecological changes impact the butterflies\u00a0and serve as a forward leading indicator for the overall\u00a0health of an ecosystem.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The volatile\u00a0climate in California in the last decade has\u00a0threatened the butterflies, the <em>Times<\/em> reported.
