{"id":42568,"date":"2019-01-11T07:02:51","date_gmt":"2019-01-11T12:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=42568"},"modified":"2019-01-11T07:02:51","modified_gmt":"2019-01-11T12:02:51","slug":"for-hollywood-vice-remarkably-astute-about-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=42568","title":{"rendered":"For Hollywood, \u2018Vice\u2019 Remarkably Astute about Politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2019\/01\/10\/for-hollywood-vice-remarkably-astute-about-politics\/\">For Hollywood, \u2018Vice\u2019 Remarkably Astute about Politics<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Adam McKay\u2019s movie may be flawed, but it\u2019s still must-see for his depiction of how Cheney amassed power by exploiting Watergate, an inexperienced president and 9\/11, writes James DiEugenio. <span id=\"more-32305\"><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>I<\/strong>n 2015, director Adam McKay did something unusual in Hollywood.\u00a0 He made a good film out of a good book.\u00a0 In fact, one could argue that McKay\u2019s movie \u201cThe Big Short\u201d is even better than Michael Lewis\u2019 book.\u00a0 It is funnier, has a faster pace and is much more innovative stylistically.<\/p>\n<p>McKay has now done something even more unusual for Hollywood.\u00a0 He has made a good film about an unattractive and unlikeable character, former Vice-President Dick Cheney.\u00a0Appropriately, the film is called \u201cVice.\u201d I am going to say some critical things about \u201cVice.\u201d<em>\u00a0 <\/em>But let me start by recommending that everyone who reads this website see this film. (@vicemovie on Twitter)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Early in his life, Cheney flunked out of Yale and was tagged with two DUI\u2019s.\u00a0 His wife Lynne\u2014who later became a prolific author\u2014helped straighten him out \u00a0and put him on a path toward a political career.\u00a0 From that point on, McKay, who also wrote the script, frames Cheney with the following epigraph, which is written across the screen at one point:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeware the quiet man.\u00a0 For while others speak, he watched.
