The Culprits Were Likely Crickets.<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Post-body\">\n<div class=\"Post-content-block-outer\">\n<div class=\"GridContainer Post-scroll-container\">\n<div class=\"GridRow\">\n<div class=\"Post-content-block\">\n<div class=\"Post-content-block-inner Post-content-block-inner--without-image\">\n<div class=\"PostContent\">\n<p><u>NBC NEWS AND MSNBC SPECIALIZE<\/u>\u00a0in repeating and disseminating what U.S intelligence officials tell them to say and then calling that servitude \u201creporting.\u201d Those two networks really are the all-but-official outlets for CIA messaging. And this status has led their brightest on-air stars to\u00a0broadcast\u00a0a series of extremely consequential stories that turned out to <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/12\/09\/the-u-s-media-yesterday-suffered-its-most-humiliating-debacle-in-ages-now-refuses-all-transparency-over-what-happened\/\">be humiliatingly wrong<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This stenographic and highly jingoistic\u00a0practice of mindlessly reciting the whispered claims of anonymous \u201cintelligence officials\u201d\u00a0is what notoriously led the New York Times and other leading U.S. media outlets to deceive the country into believing Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz\u2019s fairy tales about Iraqi WMDs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2002\/03\/25\/the-great-terror\">Jeffrey Goldberg\u2019s tales about Saddam\u2019s alliance with Al Qaeda<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But while many of those outlets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/05\/26\/world\/from-the-editors-the-times-and-iraq.html\">apologized for<\/a> that behavior and vowed to avoid it in the future, NBC and MSNBC have committed themselves to it with greater vigor than ever, as evidenced by the increasing prominence of their national security reporter Ken Dilanian, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/media\/2014\/09\/ken-dilanian-sent-cia-drafts-of-stories-194906\">entire career<\/a> has <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2014\/09\/04\/former-l-times-reporter-cleared-stories-cia-publication\/\">been defined<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/jonathan-valania\/la-times-disowns-reporter_b_5770388.html\">repeating what the CIA tells him<\/a> to say \u2013 and has thus been plagued by one embarrassing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/msnbc\/watch\/sources-email-shows-effort-to-give-trump-camp-hacked-wikileaks-documents-1112367171825\">false story after the next<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, veteran national security reporter William Arkin <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2019\/01\/03\/veteran-nbcmsnbc-journalist-blasts-the-network-for-being-captive-to-the-national-security-state-and-reflexively-pro-war-to-stop-trump\/\">announced his departure from those networks<\/a>, blasting them as stenographic servants of the security state agencies and pro-war propaganda. Noting that ex-generals and CIA officials dominate the NBC\/MSNBC airwaves, Arkin wrote: \u201cin many ways\u00a0NBC\u00a0just began emulating the national security state itself \u2013 busy and profitable,\u201d adding:\u00a0\u201cthe national security leaders and generals\u00a0we have\u00a0are\u00a0allowed to do their thing unmolested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We now have what might be the most vivid, reckless and dangerous illustration yet of how NBC and MSNBC functions.
