War with China is on the drawing board of the Pentagon.\u00a0<\/em>China has responded to US threats and military deployments in the Indo-Pacific region. President Xi Jinping<\/strong>\u00a0has ordered the People\u2019s Liberation Army to prepare for a possible war.<\/em><\/p>\n

Addressing China\u2019s Central Military Commission, Xi said<\/p>\n

\u201c(a)ll military units must correctly understand major national security and development trends, and strengthen their sense of unexpected hardship, crisis and battle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world is facing a period of major changes never seen in a century, and China is still in an important period of strategic opportunity for development.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Xi ordered stepped up military training and exercises, saying China\u2019s armed forces must \u201cprepare for a comprehensive military struggle from a new starting point\u201d, adding:<\/p>\n

\u201cPreparation for war and combat must be deepened to ensure an efficient response in times of emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Days earlier, a People\u2019s Liberation Army (PLA) Daily editorial stressed there\u2019s \u201cno time for slackening in war preparation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Part of what\u2019s going on is what Xi called his aim for \u201cpeaceful reunification\u201d with Taiwan. Beijing considers the island state a breakaway province, reunification inevitable, by force if \u201cdemocratic consultations\u201d fail to \u201creach transitional arrangements for the peaceful development of cross-strait ties,\u201d adding:<\/p>\n

\u201cChinese don\u2019t fight Chinese,\u201d while saying his government \u201cmakes no promise to renounce the use of force and reserves the option of taking all necessary means\u201d for reunification, stressing no tolerance for \u201cforeign intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c(O)ne country, two systems\u201d is the way forward, he said, the approach adopted in reunification with Hong Kong and Macau.<\/p>\n

Xi\u2019s remarks followed enactment of the US Asia Reassurance Initiative Act (ARIA), discussed in a separate article \u2013 legislation authorizing funding for Washington\u2019s imperial Indo\/Pacific agenda, mainly by its military footprint in a part of the world not its own, the way it operates globally.<\/p>\n
