In December, Lake Poop\u00f3 became a dry salt pan and its largest lake \u2013 Lake Titicaca \u2013 is heading towards trouble, too. <strong>The combination of silting up and irrigation withdrawal<\/strong> from the Desaguadero River, which feeds Poop\u00f3, <strong>together with climate change and the extra warmth from current El Ni\u00f1o, were enough to finish this lake off.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recent research and new data suggest that lakes in other parts of the world may also be on their way out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsidering the size of the lake \u2013 2700 square kilometers (1042 square miles) \u2013 this is quite an astounding event, with slim prospects of recovery,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountainpartnership.org\/members\/members-detail\/en\/c\/77623\/\">Dirk Hoffmann<\/a> from the Bolivia Mountain Institute. \u201cThis event should serve as a real warning.
