{"id":42253,"date":"2019-01-04T09:31:57","date_gmt":"2019-01-04T14:31:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=42253"},"modified":"2019-01-04T09:31:57","modified_gmt":"2019-01-04T14:31:57","slug":"the-hidden-structure-of-u-s-empire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=42253","title":{"rendered":"The Hidden Structure of U.S. Empire"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"headline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2019\/01\/04\/the-hidden-structure-of-u-s-empire\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">The Hidden Structure of U.S. Empire<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"post_content\">\n<p>My father was a doctor in the British Royal Navy, and I grew up traveling by troop-ship between the last outposts of the British Empire \u2013 Trincomalee, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Malta, Aden, Singapore \u2013 and living in and around naval dockyards in England and Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>The British naval bases where I grew up and the fading empire they supported are now part of history.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thedockyard.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\">Chatham Dockyard<\/a>. a working dockyard for over 400 years, is now a museum and tourist attraction.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jdslanka.org\/index.php\/news-features\/politics-a-current-affairs\/569-un-visit-gotas-camp-secret-torture-site-in-sri-lanka-navy-base\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\">Trincomalee Dockyard<\/a>, where I was born, has been in the news as\u00a0a site where the Sri Lankan Navy is accused of torturing and disappearing Tamil prisoners during the Sri Lankan civil war.<\/p>\n<p>Since the late\u00a01970s, I have lived in California and Florida, grappling with the contradictions of U.S. empire like other Americans.\u00a0 The U.S. does not have an internationally recognized territorial empire like the British or Ottoman Empires. American politicians routinely deny that the United States maintains or seeks an empire at all, even as they insist that its interests extend across the entire world, and as its policies impact the lives \u2013 and threaten the future \u2013 of people everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>So how are we to understand this phenomenon of U.S. empire, which is so central to all our lives and our future, and yet whose structure remains\u00a0hidden and covert?<\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/ethnographies-of-us-empire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\"><i>Ethnographies of U.S. Empire<\/i><\/a><i>,\u00a0<\/i>co-edited by Carol McGranahan of the University of Colorado and John F.
