{"id":4213,"date":"2015-01-07T15:06:47","date_gmt":"2015-01-07T20:06:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=4213"},"modified":"2015-01-07T15:06:47","modified_gmt":"2015-01-07T20:06:47","slug":"for-california-salmon-drought-and-warm-water-mean-trouble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=4213","title":{"rendered":"For California Salmon, Drought  And Warm Water Mean Trouble"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/feature\/for_california_salmon_drought_and_warm_water_mean_trouble\/2834\/\" target=\"_blank\">For California Salmon, Drought\u00a0And Warm Water Mean Trouble<\/a><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"dek\"><em>With record drought and warming waters due to climate change, scientists are concerned that the future for Chinook salmon \u2014 a critical part of the state\u2019s fishing industry \u2014 is in jeopardy in California.<\/em><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"author\">by alastair bland<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gushing downpours finally arrived in California last month, when December rains brought some relief to a landscape parched after three years of severe drought.<\/p>\n<p>But the rain came too late for thousands of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmfs.noaa.gov\/pr\/species\/fish\/chinooksalmon.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Chinook salmon<\/a>\u00a0that spawned this summer and fall in the northern Central Valley. The Sacramento River, running lower than usual under the scorching sun, warmed into the low 60s\u00a0\u2014 a temperature range that can be lethal to fertilized\u00a0Chinook eggs. Millions were destroyed, and almost an entire year-class of both fall-run Chinook, the core of the state\u2019s salmon fishing industry, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usbr.gov\/mp\/cvo\/OCAP\/sep08_docs\/OCAP_BA_005_Aug08.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">winter-run Chinook<\/a>, an endangered species whose eggs incubate in the summer, was lost.<\/p>\n<p>The disaster comes on the heels of a similar event the previous autumn.
