Or, for that matter, from Afghanistan, where we have been trapped for more than 17 long years of still open-ended occupation?<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjpy3ozvd001k3k5y4pkk4aur@published\" data-word-count=\"53\">If the answer to that question is that only when each of these countries is a healthy pro-American democracy, and Islamist terrorism has ceased to be an \u201cenduring\u201d threat to the West, then the answer, as the old Bob Mankoff joke has it, is \u201cHow about never \u2014 is never good for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjpy3ozy8001o3k5yrj42072m@published\" data-word-count=\"102\">Or consider what a shocked Lieutenant General Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. of the Marines, the incoming commander of Central Command <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/20\/us\/politics\/afghanistan-troop-withdrawal.html?action=click&amp;module=Spotlight&amp;pgtype=Homepage\">opined<\/a> after hearing the news of Trump\u2019s withdrawal of 7,000 troops from Afghanistan yesterday: \u201cIf we left precipitously right now, I do not believe [the Afghan forces] would be able to successfully defend their country. I don\u2019t know how long it\u2019s going to take. I think that one of the things that would actually provide the most damage to them would be if we put a timeline on it and we said we were going out at a certain point in time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjpy3ozy4001m3k5y5plx9ap9@published\" data-word-count=\"74\">Get that? After 17 years, we\u2019ve gotten nowhere, like every single occupier before us. But <em>for that reason<\/em>, we have to stay. These commanders have been singing this tune year after year for <em>17 years<\/em> of occupation, and secretaries of Defense have kept agreeing with them. Trump gave them one last surge of troops \u2014 violating his own campaign promise \u2014 and we got nowhere one more time.
