Through urban farms, school gardens, school lunch programs and more, these groups\u00a0are alleviating food insecurity and building food justice in America.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whyhunger.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">WhyHunger<\/a>, which supports\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2014\/04\/15\/local-produce-local-economies\/\" target=\"_blank\">community-based<\/a>\u00a0organizations that seek solutions to underlying causes of hunger and connect people with\u00a0quality food, has been documenting these community members\u2019 stories through its project,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2014\/08\/25\/hunger\/\">Community Voices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These projects have been made possible in part through the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nifa.usda.gov\/fo\/communityfoodprojects.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s Community Food Project<\/a>, which funds projects to increase food security.\u00a0Here are four stories of organizations working to empower low-income communities with access to fresh and healthy food:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Services Unlimited<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><a href=\"http:\/\/csuinc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Community Services Unlimited<\/a>\u00a0(CSU) has been serving South Los Angeles\u00a0for decades through its food justice efforts. CSU now has a number of programs.\u00a0The first,\u00a0From the Ground Up, is a youth training internship developing leaders in food and social justice. Another is Growing Healthy, which works with younger children to teach them nutrition and the basic tenets of food security and food justice. The third program is\u00a0the Home Garden project, which encourages, educates and provides resources for residents wishing to grow their own food.
