{"id":42053,"date":"2018-12-28T09:36:05","date_gmt":"2018-12-28T14:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=42053"},"modified":"2018-12-28T09:36:05","modified_gmt":"2018-12-28T14:36:05","slug":"2018-was-a-year-of-deadly-climate-disasters-and-an-ear-splitting-wake-up-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=42053","title":{"rendered":"2018 Was a Year of Deadly Climate Disasters and an &#8216;Ear Splitting Wake-Up Call&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2018\/12\/28\/year-deadly-climate-disasters-ear-splitting-wake-call-scientists\">2018 Was a Year of Deadly Climate Disasters and an &#8216;Ear Splitting Wake-Up Call&#8217;<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-13388 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-bimage field-type-image field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/Florence%20flooding.jpg?itok=n5IusLoj\" alt=\"Hurricane Florence flooding\" width=\"826\" height=\"551\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>2018 is set to rank as the fourth warmest year on record \u2014 and the fourth year in a row reflecting a full degree Celsius (1.8\u00b0 Fahrenheit)\u00a0temperature rise from the late 1800s, climate scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ClimateOfGavin\/status\/1063106429530333184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">say<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This was the year that introduced us to fire tornadoes, bomb cyclones, and, in Death Valley, a five day streak of 125\u00b0F temperatures, part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/cat6\/Death-Valley-Sets-US-Record-Hottest-Month-1080F-Average-Temperature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hottest month<\/a> ever documented at a <span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span> weather\u00a0station.<\/p>\n<p>2018 also brought the world\u2019s highest-ever low temperature, as nighttime temperatures fell to a sizzling 109\u00b0F in Quiryat, Oman, on June 28, smashing a 2011 record-high\u00a0low.<\/p>\n<p>A startling 95 percent of the oldest and thickest Arctic sea ice <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/scientists-shocked-that-warming-has-wiped-out-oldest-thickest-arctic-sea-ice-febe927ab619\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is now gone<\/a> \u2014 and we\u2019re losing Arctic ice at a rate of 14,000 tons <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/scientists-shocked-that-warming-has-wiped-out-oldest-thickest-arctic-sea-ice-febe927ab619\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per second<\/a>, according to recent research, three times as fast as roughly three decades\u00a0ago.<\/p>\n<p>It was a year notable both for its overwhelming,\u00a0climate-fueled\u00a0impacts as well as its gut-wrenching predictions for what climate change still has in store for us if we fail to act.
