Oil price volatility \u2013 including its downward trend \u2013 will linger well into the first and second quarters as global production persists and key conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East show no end. For its part, the United States is better positioned than most \u2013 the US is poised to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/articles\/2014-11-06\/2015-global-economic-outlook-better-than-2014-but-not-by-much\">carry<\/a>\u00a0the global economy in 2015 with projected GDP growth of 3.1 percent. However, converting this potential into meaningful energy trade and\/or soft power is another matter altogether and 2015 offers limited opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>US production has shown no\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/hist\/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&amp;s=MCRFPUS2&amp;f=M\">signs<\/a>\u00a0of a significant slowdown and the Energy Information Administration\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.cfm?id=19411\">predicts<\/a>\u00a0growth in 2015 \u2013 approximately 700,000 barrels per day. Despite the collapse, prices remain high enough to support the most vital development drilling activity in the Bakken, Eagle Ford, and Permian Basins. The rig count is declining, but data from the 2008-09 recession suggests a drop in production will not be so dramatic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/images\/tinymce\/Evan1\/ada1181.png\" alt=\"Drilling In North Dakota 08-09\" width=\"575\" height=\"287\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps in anticipation of greater volumes, the Obama administration and the Department of Commerce clarified existing regulations and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/12\/31\/us-usa-crude-exports-analysis-idUSKBN0K908M20141231\">opened the door<\/a>\u00a0for increased US exports last week \u2013 up to one million barrels per day (mbpd) of ultra-light crude oil. The exports will expose producers to more lucrative markets abroad and may further narrow the price spread between Brent and WTI.
