known as \u2018the Carrington Event\u2019 &#8211; occurred\u00a0in 1859, knocked out telegraph circuits around the world,\u00a0starting fires and causing massive auroras as far south as Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/geo%20storm.jpg?itok=1_MEh3mb\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/geo%20storm.jpg?itok=1_MEh3mb\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/geo%20storm.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/geo%20storm.jpg?itok=1_MEh3mb 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"297\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"33e8c21a-e315-4e03-b934-1c08be621c39\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1989, a solar storm\u00a0caused a voltage collapse of Canada\u2019s Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec power grid, knocking out power for six million residents for nine hours and in 2005, another storm blew out GPS communication for about ten minutes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/science\/2018\/12\/22\/solar-storms-could-cause-blackouts-leave-britain-16-billion\/\">The Daily Telegraph<\/a> said more recently, a coronal mass ejection (CME), which is a blast of plasma from the sun,\u00a0narrowly missed Earth during London\u2019s 2012 Olympic Games, which at the time, the London region was Earth-facing\u00a0&#8211; could have crippled communication networks and caused mass panic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/solar%20blast.jpg?itok=oOe8J6-3\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/solar%20blast.jpg?itok=oOe8J6-3\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/solar%20blast.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/solar%20blast.jpg?itok=oOe8J6-3 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"306\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"90ffdb1c-d52f-450d-9886-3ecccd000792\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earth\u2019s magnetic field protects\u00a0the plant from the sun&#8217;s harmful blasts of energy, but sometimes the sun overpowers the planet\u2019s defenses.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2017, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-04-22\/yesterdays-broad-power-outage-likely-caused-geomagnetic-storm\">reported<\/a> that\u00a0San Fransisco, New York, and Los Angeles,\u00a0simultaneously experienced\u00a0a\u00a0<strong>power grid failure.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It was convenient\u00a0at the time for many to blame the Russians; however, our report showed readers how the\u00a0broad power outage was likely caused by a geomagnetic storm.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The inability to forecast and prepare for events could be catastrophic for the economy,&#8221;
