The Next Big Solar Storm Could Cripple Britain’s Infrastructure With \u00a316 Billion Worth Of Damage<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Scientists at Oxford University, have produced the first economic risk model that details the next big solar storm could leave Britain with \u00a316 billion ($20.3 billion) worth of damage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A geomagnetic storm\u00a0triggered<\/a> by a burst of solar energy from the sun could\u00a0overwhelm the nation\u2019s power grid, air travel, and disrupt\u00a0satellite communications.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The largest ever known space weather event\u00a0– known as \u2018the Carrington Event\u2019 – occurred\u00a0in 1859, knocked out telegraph circuits around the world,\u00a0starting fires and causing massive auroras as far south as Hawaii.<\/p>\n

In 1989, a solar storm\u00a0caused a voltage collapse of Canada\u2019s Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec power grid, knocking out power for six million residents for nine hours and in 2005, another storm blew out GPS communication for about ten minutes.<\/p>\n

The Daily Telegraph<\/a> said more recently, a coronal mass ejection (CME), which is a blast of plasma from the sun,\u00a0narrowly missed Earth during London\u2019s 2012 Olympic Games, which at the time, the London region was Earth-facing\u00a0– could have crippled communication networks and caused mass panic.<\/p>\n

Earth\u2019s magnetic field protects\u00a0the plant from the sun’s harmful blasts of energy, but sometimes the sun overpowers the planet\u2019s defenses.<\/p>\n

In April 2017, we reported<\/a> that\u00a0San Fransisco, New York, and Los Angeles,\u00a0simultaneously experienced\u00a0a\u00a0power grid failure.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was convenient\u00a0at the time for many to blame the Russians; however, our report showed readers how the\u00a0broad power outage was likely caused by a geomagnetic storm.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The inability to forecast and prepare for events could be catastrophic for the economy,” Oxford University warned, adding that a powerful geomagnetic storm could cost\u00a0Britain billions, due to damaging effects on critical infrastructure, business, and homes.<\/p>\n

Their economic model details blackouts across the\u00a0northeast and northwest of England, East Anglia and Wales, where power grids are not properly protected against\u00a0solar radiation and where transformers in 1989 melted down from a solar storm.<\/p>\n
