America Is One Of The World’s Deadliest Countries For Journalists<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Media group\u00a0Reporters Without Borders<\/a> said Tuesday it has observed a terrifying\u00a0trend in the number of journalists killed and imprisoned worldwide, in 2018.<\/p>\n

For the first time, the US is one of\u00a0the world\u2019s deadliest countries for journalists after six\u00a0were killed.<\/p>\n

The Paris-based group, also known as RSF, said the\u00a0US ranked\u00a0sixth on the list for most dangerous countries for journalists, behind Afghanistan, Syria, Mexico, Yemen, and India.<\/p>\n

Four journalists, as well as a sales manager, were killed\u00a0in June when a deranged\u00a0gunman\u00a0opened fire at the Annapolis, Maryland\u00a0offices\u00a0of the Capital Gazette. Two more\u00a0reporters, a North Carolina television anchor\u00a0and\u00a0cameraman, were killed by a tree while covering a hurricane in May.<\/p>\n

“Non-professional journalists play a fundamental role in the production of news and information in countries with oppressive regimes and countries at war, where it is hard for professional journalists to operate,”\u00a0RSF\u00a0said in the report.<\/p>\n

The big picture: The group states\u00a0there is an\u00a0“unprecedented” level of worldwide hostility against members of the press, than in any other period on record.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Murder,\u00a0imprisonment, hostage-taking, and\u00a0disappearances of journalists all increased\u00a0on a year-over-year basis.<\/p>\n

In total,\u00a080 journalists\u00a0were killed\u00a0in 2018, with 49 murdered while 31 were killed in the act of reporting.<\/p>\n

While the report blames warzones in\u00a0Afghanistan for the increased deaths, 45% of those killed were not in conflict regions.<\/p>\n

Three hundred and forty-eight\u00a0reporters have so far been\u00a0detained\u00a0this year and\u00a060\u00a0were held\u00a0hostage.<\/p>\n

China leads the world in detentions, with 60 journalists held in state\u00a0jails. Thirty-one journalists are currently being held in Syria.<\/p>\n

“Violence against journalists has reached unprecedented levels this year, and the situation is now critical,” Christophe Deloire, the group’s secretary general said.<\/p>\n
