The heart and soul of Pompeo\u2019s remarks extolling the return of \u201cthe United States to its traditional, central leadership role in the world\u201d were little more than a rehash of Bush the Elder\u2019s aggressive internationalism.<\/p>\n<p>Pompeo (or his speechwriter) should be given credit for a masterpiece of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Misdirection_(magic)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Misdirection_(magic)\">misdirection<\/a>. While the substance of his speech was a blast of stale air from the 1990s, the rhetoric was all Trumpism and national sovereignty \u2013 but only for countries obedient to Washington: \u201cOur mission is to reassert our sovereignty, reform the liberal international order, and we want our friends to help us and to exert their sovereignty as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What about the sovereignty of countries the US\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0count as \u201cfriends\u201d? Well, that\u2019s a different story: \u201cEvery nation \u2013\u00a0every nation\u00a0\u2013 must honestly acknowledge its responsibilities to its citizens and ask if the current international order serves the good of its people as well as it could. And if not,\u00a0we must ask how we can right it.\u201d [emphasis added]<\/p>\n<p>So according to Pompeo, the United States and our vassals (\u201cwe\u201d) have an obligation (\u201cmust\u201d) to fix international actors that in our infinite wisdom are not serving \u201cthe good of their people.\u201d For example, \u201cRussia hasn\u2019t embraced Western values of freedom and international cooperation.\u201d (Why should Russia care what \u201cwe\u201d think of its values \u2013 and why should its values be \u201cwestern,\u201d anyway?
