{"id":41596,"date":"2018-12-13T09:05:19","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T14:05:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=41596"},"modified":"2018-12-13T09:05:19","modified_gmt":"2018-12-13T14:05:19","slug":"powering-the-tesla-gigafactory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=41596","title":{"rendered":"Powering the Tesla Gigafactory"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/euanmearns.com\/powering-the-tesla-gigafactory\/\">Powering the Tesla Gigafactory<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/1460563292-31564-Can-The-Tesla-Gigafactory-Really-Slash-Battery-Costs-By-30-_1_grande.jpg?17161869298022470378\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"10\" \/>Tesla has repeatedly claimed in publications, articles and tweets from Elon Musk that its Reno, Nevada Gigafactory will be powered 100% by renewables.\u00a0 Specifics on exactly how Tesla plans to do this are sparse, but the data that are available suggest that Tesla\u2019s 70MW rooftop solar array won\u2019t come close to supplying the Gigafactory\u2019s needs and that the other options that Tesla is now or has been considering (more solar, possibly wind, battery storage) will not bridge the gap. As a result the Gigafactory will probably end up obtaining most of its electricity from the Nevada grid, 75% of which is presently generated by fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Lest there be any doubt about Tesla\u2019s claim that the Gigafactory will be powered with 100% renewables, here are some tweets from Mr Musk:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>July 27, 2016:<\/strong> Should mention that Gigafactory will be fully powered by clean energy when complete<\/p>\n<p><strong>June 8, 2018:<\/strong> Gigafactory should be on 100% renewable energy (primarily solar with some wind) by next year. Rollout of solar has already begun<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 25, 2018:<\/strong> Tesla\u2019s Gigafactory will be 100% renewable powered (by Tesla Solar) by end of next year<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Plus this excerpt from the January 2016 <a href=\"http:\/\/files.shareholder.com\/downloads\/ABEA-4CW8X0\/5986041847x0x923441\/23F40B9D-D2B8-47C7-A77B-D07C5240FCFB\/Tesla_Gigafactory1_Tour_Jan_2016_Handout_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"blank\">Gigafactory tour handout<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(The Gigafactory) is an all-electric factory with no fossil fuels (natural gas or petroleum) directly consumed. We will be using 100% sustainable energy through a combination of a 70 MW solar rooftop array and solar ground installations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Plus this one from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/presskit?redirect=no\" target=\"blank\">Tesla\u2019s \u201cpress kit\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Gigafactory is designed to be a net-zero energy factory upon completion. It will not consume any fossil fuels \u2013 there is no natural gas piped to the site nor are there permanent diesel generators being used to provide power \u2026 The entire roof of the Gigafactory will be covered in solar array, and installation is already underway.
