{"id":41594,"date":"2018-12-13T09:02:14","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T14:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=41594"},"modified":"2018-12-13T09:02:14","modified_gmt":"2018-12-13T14:02:14","slug":"countries-that-blocked-welcoming-of-major-climate-science-report-at-un-talks-have-dozens-of-delegates-with-ties-to-oil-gas-and-mining","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=41594","title":{"rendered":"Countries that Blocked &#8216;Welcoming&#8217; of Major Climate Science Report at UN Talks have Dozens of Delegates with Ties to Oil, Gas, and Mining"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2018\/12\/12\/countries-blocked-welcoming-major-climate-science-report-un-talks-have-dozens-delegates-ties-oil-gas-and-mining\">Countries that Blocked &#8216;Welcoming&#8217; of Major Climate Science Report at UN Talks have Dozens of Delegates with Ties to Oil, Gas, and Mining<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-13359 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-bimage field-type-image field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/cop24%20back%20of%20head.jpg?itok=pyi2q4jk\" alt=\"COP24 plenary\" width=\"826\" height=\"551\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"new-horizontal-social-bar clearfix\">\n<div class=\"new-horizontal-share-wrapper new-horizontal-fb-wrapper clearfix\">Dozens of delegates from four countries that forced the <span class=\"caps\">UN<\/span> climate negotiations to weaken language around the acceptance of a major climate science report have ties to the oil, gas and mining\u00a0industries.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>At least 35 delegates from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Russia and the <span class=\"caps\">US<\/span> are either currently employed or used to work for companies and organisations involved in the petrochemical and mining industries\u00a0or lobbying on behalf of those\u00a0industries.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (<span class=\"caps\">UNFCCC<\/span>) \u201cnoted\u201d the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u2019s (<span class=\"caps\">IPCC<\/span>) landmark 1.5 degrees report at the annual talks in Katowice, Poland. Poor and undeveloped countries, small island states, Europeans and many others called to change the wording to \u201cwelcome\u201d the study, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2018\/12\/08\/climate-science-1-5c-erased-un-talks-us-saudis-step\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Climate Home reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"caps\">IPCC<\/span>\u2019s report, released in October 2018, warned that the world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2018\/10\/07\/ipcc-report-says-1-5c-climate-target-reachable-only-rapid-fossil-fuel-phase-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has 12 years to radically cut emissions<\/a> to avoid catastrophic climate change. The report was commissioned by countries at the annual climate talks in Paris in\u00a02015.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 35 delegates DeSmog <span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span> has identified with ties to the fossil fuel and mining industries, 12 are representing Saudi Arabia, and nine are representing Russia. <span class=\"caps\">NGO<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/climatetracker.org\/over-25-fossil-fuel-representatives-part-of-country-delegations-at-cop24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Climate Tracker previously identified 13 delegates<\/a> representing Kuwait that worked for the fossil fuel\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the Saudi Arabian delegates currently work for state oil and gas producer Saudi Aramco &#8211; reportedly the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-04-13\/the-aramco-accounts-inside-the-world-s-most-profitable-company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most profitable company<\/a> in the world &#8211; including Khalid Al-Falih, Saudi Arabia\u2019s Minister Energy, Industry and Natural Resources and chairman of Saudi Aramco. The company is estimated to be worth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7ed59bee-163b-11e7-b0c1-37e417ee6c76\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">around $2 trillion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the Russian delegates at this year\u2019s annual talks work for natural gas producer Gazprom, in which the Russian government holds the majority stake.
