Russia has further framed the incident as one in which the American ship was essentially chased out of the area.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-img\" role=\"group\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/USS-McCampbell.jpg?itok=tZL_Ql2R\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/USS-McCampbell.jpg?itok=tZL_Ql2R\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/USS-McCampbell.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/USS-McCampbell.jpg?itok=tZL_Ql2R 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"297\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"bc8f0636-0504-4fab-8a35-19fbd7bc6629\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>USS McCampbell, Getty images<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The U.S. Pacific Fleet confirmed that the guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell sailed \u201cin the vicinity of\u201d Peter the Great Bay on Wednesday\u00a0<em>\u2014<\/em>\u00a0a body of water off the Russian port city of Vladivostok\u00a0<em>\u2014 <\/em>in order to\u00a0\u201c<strong>challenge Russia&#8217;s excessive maritime claims<\/strong> and uphold the rights, freedoms and lawful uses of the sea enjoyed by the United States and other nations,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/u-s-destroyer-challenges-russian-claims-sea-japan-n944566\">Navy official statement<\/a>. The United States does not recognize Russia&#8217;s claim to the waters in question.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ac-lre-player-ph\">\n<div id=\"ac-lre-wrapper\" class=\"pumika\">\n<div id=\"ac-player-ph\">\n<div id=\"ac-player-wrapper\">In a statement reported by\u00a0<em>Bloomberg\u00a0<\/em>the Russian Defense Ministry (MoD) said <strong>its own warship and aircraft had escorted the American destroyer as it sailed near the contested waters<\/strong>. The MoD emphasized the USS McCampbell didn\u2019t enter to within 100 kilometers (60 miles) to Russian territorial waters.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But most interesting\u00a0is that Russia is framing the US destroyer&#8217;s reaction as one of attempting <strong>&#8220;to escape at full speed&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0from the Russian escort vessels:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIf the American destroyer\u2019s crew demonstrated anything, it was its unsuccessful attempt to escape at full speed from Pacific Fleet forces escorting it,\u201d<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-12-06\/russian-navy-escorted-u-s-warship-near-contested-pacific-waters?srnd=premium\">statement\u00a0said<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The incident occurred in the general vicinity of where the Russian Pacific Fleet is based.
