{"id":4120,"date":"2015-01-05T19:39:24","date_gmt":"2015-01-06T00:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=4120"},"modified":"2015-01-05T19:39:24","modified_gmt":"2015-01-06T00:39:24","slug":"lord-ridley-make-mine-a-large-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=4120","title":{"rendered":"Lord Ridley: Make Mine A Large One!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/01\/05\/lord-ridley-make-mine-large-one\" target=\"_blank\">Lord Ridley: Make Mine A Large One!<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/matt-ridley\">Lord Ridley<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/ld201314\/ldhansrd\/text\/130514-0001.htm#13051441000438\" target=\"_blank\">landed aristocrat<\/a>\u00a0and prominent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegwpf.com\/matt-ridley-whatever-happened-to-global-warming\/\" target=\"_blank\">climate denier<\/a>, will start work this year on two new profitable opencast coal mines close to his Grade I listed stately home and acres of beautiful national park that make up his 8,500-acre\u00a0estate.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blagdonestate.co.uk\/about-blagdon\/family-history\" target=\"_blank\">Ridley-White family has\u00a0<\/a>owned the\u00a0stunning Blagdon Estate in Northumbria since 1700, where they have mined coal and fireclay to amass a considerable fortune while fuelling the Industrial Revolution and British\u00a0Empire.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmog.uk\/2015\/01\/04\/matt-ridley-fires-about-coal-fortune\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"caps\">READ<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">RIDLEY<\/span>&#8216;S\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">FULL<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">REPLY<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The peer\u2019s property, held by a family trust, today covers a significant part of the open mines at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.banksgroup.co.uk\/shotton\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shotton<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.banksgroup.co.uk\/brenkley-lane\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brenkley Lane<\/a>, north of Newcastle, which together contain 8.3m tonnes of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/1383683-letter-the-viscount-ridley-dl.html\" target=\"_blank\">coal, worth an estimated \u00a3607m<\/a>\u00a0on the spot\u00a0market.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.banksgroup.co.uk\/banks-group\/banks-mining\/\" target=\"_blank\">Banks Mining<\/a>, which operates Ridley\u2019s mines, has won planning permission to open two further opencast mines, with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.banksgroup.co.uk\/shotton-triangle-planning-application-approved\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shotton Triangle Extension<\/a>\u00a0yielding 300,000 tonnes worth about \u00a322m and Shotton South West providing 250,000 tonnes and \u00a318m by 2017.
