Sacks Of Cash, Martial Law, And All Smiles: IMF’s “Constructive” Phone Call With Ukraine’s President<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Funny how it works… The same week Ukrainian President\u00a0Petro Poroshenko\u00a0imposed martial law\u00a0on much of the country, the International Monetary Fund assured him that key parameters of the 2019 budget were on track for a\u00a0proposed $3.9 billion new aid <\/strong>program<\/strong>agreed to last month\u00a0which is designed to\u00a0help\u00a0the country maintain financial stability and the trust of investors especially ahead of an uncertain election period next year.<\/p>\n

IMF\u00a0Managing Director Christine Lagarde personally made the assurance in a phone call with Poroshenko on Wednesday<\/a>\u00a0\u2014<\/em>\u00a0the same day<\/em>the Ukrainian president signed the new martial law legislation into effect<\/strong>.\u00a0According to Ukraine’s popular\u00a0independent news agency\u00a0Unian<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n

It was particularly underlined that the introduction of the martial law does not influence the interaction with the IMF<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Poroshenko’s press service said in a follow-up of a telephone conversation with Lagarde: “The Head of State informed Madame Lagarde about the adoption and the key parameters of the state budget of Ukraine for the year 2019. Madame Lagarde noted that, according to the IMF’s preliminary estimates, the key indicators of the state budget of Ukraine are in line with the parameters agreed with the Fund<\/strong>.”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Lagarde called the conversation \u201cconstructive\u201d<\/strong> according to Reuters<\/a>. An official statement released by Lagarde after the Wednesday phone call said<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The president informed me about the key parameters of the 2019 budget, which was recently approved by parliament and is currently under review by IMF staff. The preliminary assessment is satisfactory and the process is expected to be completed shortly.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
