Brennan,\u00a0<em>City of Houston v. Hill<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What the architects of the police state want are submissive, compliant, cooperative, obedient, meek citizens who don\u2019t talk back, don\u2019t challenge government authority, don\u2019t speak out against government misconduct, and don\u2019t step out of line.<\/p>\n<p>What the First Amendment protects\u2014and a healthy constitutional republic requires\u2014are citizens who routinely exercise their right to speak truth to power.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not an easy undertaking.<\/p>\n<p>Weaponized by police, prosecutors, courts and legislatures, \u201cdisorderly conduct\u201d charges have become a convenient means by which to punish those individuals who refuse to be muzzled.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Deyshia Hargrave, a language arts teacher in Louisiana, was thrown to the ground, handcuffed and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2018\/01\/can-government-officials-have-you-arrested-for-speaking-to-them\/550517\/\">arrested for speaking out during a public comment period at a school board meeting<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Fane Lozman was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2018\/01\/can-government-officials-have-you-arrested-for-speaking-to-them\/550517\/\">arrested for alluding to government corruption during open comment time at a City Council meeting<\/a>\u00a0in Palm Beach County, Fla.<\/li>\n<li>Dan Heyman, a reporter for the Public News Service, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/06\/business\/media\/tom-price-journalist-arrest.html\">arrested for \u201caggressively\u201d questioning Tom Price, the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services<\/a>\u00a0during an encounter in the West Virginia State Capitol.<\/li>\n<li>College professor Ersula Ore was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/av4nn5\/you-should-be-able-to-talk-back-to-the-police-without-getting-assaulted-420\">slammed to the ground and arrested after she objected to the \u201cdisrespectful manner\u201d shown by a campus cop<\/a>\u00a0who stopped her in the middle of the street and demanded that she show her ID.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, You Have the Right to Talk Back to the Government, But It Could Get You Killed \u201cThe freedom of individuals verbally to oppose or challenge police action without thereby risking arrest is one of the principal characteristics by which we distinguish a free nation from a police state.\u201d\u2014 Justice William J.
