Minority Report Comes To Life: UK Police Will Use AI To Prevent Crime<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

With increasing availability of information and new technologies,\u00a0West Midlands Police in the metropolitan county of West Midlands in England, has taken a page from the 2002 American neo-noir science fiction film, Minority\u00a0Report,\u00a0and will soon deploy artificial intelligence to stop crime before it happens,\u00a0New Scientist reveals.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The “pre-crime” software,\u00a0called the\u00a0National Data Analytics Solution<\/a>\u00a0(NDAS),\u00a0uses a blend of AI, citywide smart cameras, and\u00a0statistics to try to evaluate the risk\u00a0of someone committing and or becoming a victim\u00a0of a violent crime.<\/p>\n

West Midlands Police has taken the lead on the project and will finish the prototype system by the end of 1Q 2019. Eight other police forces across the country are involved in the development,\u00a0including London\u2019s Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester Police.\u00a0NDAS will be piloted in the\u00a0Midlands district before a nationwide rollout.\u00a0One of the main reasons behind predictive policing – is a cost-savings tool for\u00a0law enforcement agencies that have been dealing with funding issues<\/strong>,\u00a0said Iain Donnelly, the police lead on the project.<\/p>\n

Donnelly\u00a0insists\u00a0NDAS algorithms will sniff out already known criminals, and divert them with “therapeutic\u00a0interventions<\/strong>,\u201d\u00a0such as “support from local health or social workers” to avert a crime.<\/p>\n

West Midlands Police\u00a0used data and statistics from past criminal events to identify 1,400 potential indicators for crime, including 30\u00a0important ones. Machine learning algorithms then took the data points and learned how to detect crime while analyzing video from smart cameras.<\/p>\n

Predictive policing is based on prior criminal stats, including\u00a0stops, arrests, and convictions, and it is incapable of expanding the pool of suspects beyond the database.<\/p>\n

Predictably, the Alan Turing Institute found \u201cserious ethical issues<\/em>\u201d with the NDAS, warning the program could have good intentions but\u00a0\u201cinaccurate prediction” is an ongoing concern.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
