‘Time is Running Out,’ American Petroleum Institute Chief Said in 1965 Speech on Climate Change<\/a><\/h3>\n

The warning is clear and dire \u2014 and the source unexpected. \u201cThis report unquestionably will fan emotions, raise fears, and bring demand for action,\u201d the president of the American Petroleum Institute (API<\/span>)<\/a> told an oil industry conference, as he described research into climate change caused by fossil\u00a0fuels.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The substance of the report is that there is still time to save the world’s peoples from the catastrophic consequence of pollution, but time is running\u00a0out.\u201d<\/p>\n

The speaker wasn\u2019t Mike Sommers, who was named to helm API<\/span> this past May<\/a>. Nor was it Jack Gerard<\/a>, who served as API<\/span>\u2019s president for roughly a decade<\/a> starting in\u00a02008.<\/p>\n

The API<\/span> president speaking those words was named Frank Ikard \u2014 and the year was 1965, over a half-century\u00a0ago.<\/p>\n

It was the same year that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a civil rights march<\/a> from Selma to Montgomery, Muhammad Ali felled<\/a>Sonny Liston in the first round, and Malcom X was fatally shot<\/a> in New York. The first American ground combat troops arrived in Vietnam<\/a> and President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the law establishing<\/a> Medicaid and\u00a0Medicare.<\/p>\n

It would be another four years before American astronaut Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon \u2014 and another decade before the phrase \u201cglobal warming\u201d would appear for the first time<\/a> in a peer-reviewed\u00a0study.<\/p>\n

And 1965, according to a letter by Stanford historian Benjamin Franta published this week<\/a> in the peer-reviewed journal Nature, was the year that President\u00a0Johnson\u2019s Science Advisory Committee published a report titled \u201cRestoring the Quality of Our Environment<\/a>,\u201d whose findings Ikard\u00a0described at that year\u2019s annual API<\/span>\u00a0meeting.<\/p>\n
