They know one desire; to hold what is theirs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That quote is the narrative crux of Isaac Asimov\u2019s second book of the Foundation trilogy, <em>Foundation and Empire<\/em> (1952). It\u2019s the fatal flaw of the Foundation, formed originally as a noble form of galactic government, but now no better than (and easy pickings for) the Empire.<\/p>\n<p>Hold that thought.<\/p>\n<p>The narrative crux of the second note of the Things Fall Apart trilogy,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epsilontheory.com\/things-fall-apart-part-2\/\">Things Fall Apart (Part 2)<\/a><\/strong>, can be found in the following chart. It\u2019s\u00a0the relationship between U.S. household net worth (how rich we are) versus U.S. GDP (how much our economy has grown) from 1951 through today.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.epsilontheory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1951-Net-Worth-to-GDP.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.epsilontheory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1951-Net-Worth-to-GDP.png 809w, https:\/\/www.epsilontheory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1951-Net-Worth-to-GDP-768x664.png 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"506\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Both data sets are in nominal dollars (meaning neither is adjusted for inflation), both are compiled by the same people (the Fed) using the same methodology, and both are normalized at 100 to show growth rates. It\u2019s an apples-to-apples comparison, so don\u2019t @ me about semi-log charting \u2013 it adds nothing here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For 46 years, from 1951 to 1997, we were no more and no less rich than our economy grew.<\/strong>\u00a0Which makes sense.
