In Honor Of Veteran\u2019s Day: The Butterfly\u00a0Effect<\/a><\/h3>\n

To honor Veterans\u2019s Day,\u00a0 we are reposting our June 2017 butterfly piece<\/a>, which illustrates how sleepwalking<\/a> can lead the world into a war that nobody wants.<\/p>\n

French President, Emmanuel Macron, warned today about sleepwalking into another great conflict.<\/p>\n

History\u2019s Biggest \u201cButterfly Effect\u201d Occurred On This\u00a0Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The\u00a0butterfly effect<\/b>\u00a0is the concept that small causes can have large effects. Initially, it was used with weather prediction but later the term became a metaphor used in and out of science.<\/em><\/p>\n

In\u00a0chaos theory<\/a>, the\u00a0butterfly effect<\/b>\u00a0is the sensitive dependence on\u00a0initial conditions<\/a>\u00a0in which a small change in one state of a deterministic\u00a0nonlinear system<\/a>\u00a0can result in large differences in a later state. The name, coined by\u00a0Edward Lorenz<\/a>\u00a0for the effect which had been known long before, is derived from the metaphorical example of the details of a tornado (exact time of formation, exact path taken) being influenced by minor perturbations such as the flapping of the wings of a distant\u00a0butterfly<\/a>\u00a0several weeks earlier. Lorenz discovered the effect when he observed that runs of his\u00a0weather model<\/a>\u00a0with initial condition data that was rounded in a seemingly inconsequential manner would fail to reproduce the results of runs with the unrounded initial condition data. A very small change in initial conditions had created a significantly different outcome.\u00a0 \u2014\u00a0Wikipedia<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
