In the last two months, the US military has flown B-52 bombers and carried out its so-called <em>\u201cfreedom of navigation\u201d<\/em> operations in the South China Sea. There have also been instances of US warships sailing through the Taiwan Strait in support of Taiwan, an island which China considers to be a rogue part of Chinese territory.<\/p>\n<p>On a side note, it is amazing to say the least that the US believes it should have the <em>\u201cfreedom to navigate\u201d<\/em> in the South China Sea, yet seems to<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/08\/01\/politics\/us-iran-military-exercise-gulf\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> get up in arms<\/a> when Iranian ships expect the same kind of freedom in the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Near-collisions in the South China Sea<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last September, US and Chinese warships almost collided when sailing near an islet claimed by Beijing in the Spratly Islands. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com.au\/a-chinese-warship-reportedly-threatened-a-us-navy-destroyer-in-the-south-china-sea-2018-11?r=UK&amp;IR=T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reportedly,<\/a> the Chinese warship threatened the US Destroyer that it would <em>\u201csuffer consequences\u201d<\/em> if it did not move, as it sailed within 45 yards of the American vessel.<\/p>\n<p>In a last-ditch effort to avert this collision course, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defence James Mattis will<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/2171862\/us-china-set-high-level-talks-avert-south-china-sea-clashes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> host<\/a>their Chinese counterparts Yang Jiechi and China\u2019s Defence Minister Wei Fenghe this Friday for talks on reducing tensions. However, I think we can say with some confidence that these talks will be absolutely meaningless.
