The new technology uses body shapes and movement to identify people even when their face is not in the camera.<\/p>\n<p>This dystopian big brother nightmare is quickly becoming a reality for the souls residing in the People\u2019s Republic of China.\u00a0\u00a0Already used by police on the streets of Beijing and Shanghai, \u201cgait recognition\u201d is part of a push across China to develop artificial intelligence and\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-03-20\/china-deploys-ai-cameras-to-tackle-jaywalkers-in-shenzhen\/9567430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data-driven surveillance that is raising concerns about how far the technology will go<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The software, built by a Chinese artificial intelligence company called Watrix, extracts a person\u2019s silhouette from video and analyses the silhouette\u2019s movement to create a model of the way the person walks. It can identify people from 50 meters away and requires no special camera to do so.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-09-18\/china-social-credit-a-model-citizen-in-a-digital-dictatorship\/10200278\" target=\"_self\">China is building a digital dictatorship to exert control over its 1.4 billion citizens.\u00a0<\/a>As if the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shtfplan.com\/headline-news\/communist-china-moves-to-control-billions-through-social-credit_09182018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u201csocial credit\u201d scoring system<\/a> wasn\u2019t terrifying enough, the country continues to cross the line with surveilling its own people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGait analysis can\u2019t be fooled by simply limping, walking with splayed feet or hunching over, because we\u2019re analyzing all the features of an entire body,\u201d said\u00a0Watrix chief executive officer Huang Yongzhen.\u00a0<strong>\u201cYou don\u2019t need people\u2019s cooperation for us to be able to recognize their identity<\/strong>,\u201d Huang added.<\/p>\n<p>Huang is a former researcher and quite obviously an authoritarian control freak who said he left academia after seeing how promising the technology had become. He then co-founded Watrix in 2016, and his company was incubated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
