{"id":39829,"date":"2018-10-29T05:46:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T10:46:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=39829"},"modified":"2018-10-29T05:46:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T10:46:50","slug":"paul-volckers-fed-criticism-hints-at-potential-recession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=39829","title":{"rendered":"Paul Volcker\u2019s Fed Criticism Hints at Potential Recession"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"article_info article_section with_icon\">\n<div class=\"blog-head-line clearfix\">\n<div class=\"post-title-holder\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birchgold.com\/news\/paul-volcker-fed-criticism-hints-at-recession\">Paul Volcker\u2019s Fed Criticism Hints at Potential Recession<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"article_content clearfix entry-content\"><a id=\"dd_start\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13071 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.birchgold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/chair-10-26-18-3.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.birchgold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/chair-10-26-18-3.png 600w, https:\/\/www.birchgold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/chair-10-26-18-3-300x225.png 300w\" alt=\"paul volcker federal reserve\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birchgold.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birch Gold Group<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the 1980\u2019s, amidst out-of-control inflation, former Fed chairman Paul Volcker employed a controversial economic strategy of high interest rates to combat the issue.<\/p>\n<p>In that case, the economic band-aid, dubbed \u201cThe Volcker Rule\u201d, worked.<\/p>\n<p>Volcker is 91 now, and as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/23\/business\/dealbook\/paul-volcker-federal-reserve.html?smid=fb-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in the <em>New York Times<\/em>, his respect for the Fed is \u201call gone.\u201d In a recent interview about his memoir, not only did Volcker take the opportunity to travel down memory lane, he also lambasted the Fed\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.birchgold.com\/news\/banks-sputter-after-hawkish-fed-raises-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 percent rate target<\/a>\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI puzzle at the rationale,\u201d he wrote. \u201cA 2 percent target, or limit, was not in my textbook years ago. I know of no theoretical justification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a laugh, he told me that he believed the policy was driven by fears of deflation. \u201cAnd we haven\u2019t had any deflation in this country for 90 years!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>During the interview, he also made an eerie blanket statement summarizing his thoughts about the U.S., the Fed, and the economy.<\/p>\n<p>He stated clearly, \u201c<em>We\u2019re in a hell of a mess in every direction<\/em>\u201d. Talking about the stability of banks later in the interview, Volcker revealed an unsettling thought (emphasis ours):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They\u2019re in a stronger position than they were, but the honest answer is <strong>I don\u2019t know how much they\u2019re manipulating<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He finished the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/23\/business\/dealbook\/paul-volcker-federal-reserve.html?smid=fb-nytimes&amp;amp;smtyp=cur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> saying, \u201c<em>We need stronger supervisory powers<\/em>\u201d. It\u2019s tough to disagree with that.<\/p>\n<p>Especially after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birchgold.com\/news\/historic-dow-drop-reveals-market-may-be-house-of-cards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dow dropped 1,400 points<\/a> two weeks ago,\u00a0<em>and<\/em> a slight recovery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/why-the-dow-tumbled-600-points-and-the-nasdaq-fell-into-correction-territory-for-the-first-time-in-2-years-2018-10-24?siteid=yhoof2&amp;yptr=yahoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dropped<\/a> dramatically again this week, the worry in the markets is clear.<\/p>\n<p>On October 3, the Dow sat at 26,828. Market optimists were singing the praises of a market on the way to the top. But things have turned around dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the Dow closed at 24,984, for an overall <strong>drop of 1,844 points<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/index\/djia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only 22 days<\/a>.
