Who profits from the end of the mid-range nuclear treaty?<\/a><\/h3>\n

The US move to shelve the Intermediate-range Nuclear-Forces treaty could accelerate the demise of the whole post-WWII Western alliance, and herald a bad remix of the 1930s<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists<\/a> has moved its Doomsday Clock to only 2 minutes to midnight. It might be tempting to turn this into a mere squabble about arrows and olives if this wasn\u2019t such a terrifying scenario.<\/p>\n

US president Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, secretary-general of the USSR, signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) in 1987.<\/p>\n

The Arms Control Association<\/span><\/a> was extremely pleased. \u201cThe treaty marked the first time the superpowers had agreed to reduce their nuclear arsenals, eliminate an entire category of nuclear weapons, and utilize extensive on-site inspections for verification.\u201d<\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Three decades later, the Trump administration wants to unilaterally pull out of the INF Treaty.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week President Trump sent his national security adviser\u00a0John Bolton to officially break the news to Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.<\/p>\n

As they were discussing extremely serious issues such as implications of a dissolving INF Treaty, the perpetuation of anti-Russia sanctions, the risk of not extending a new START Treaty and the deployment, in Putin\u2019s words, of \u201csome elements of the missile shield in outer space\u201d, the Russian President got into, well, arrows and olives:<\/p>\n

\u201cAs\u00a0I\u00a0recall,\u00a0there is a\u00a0bald eagle pictured on\u00a0the\u00a0US coat of\u00a0arms: it holds 13 arrows in\u00a0one talon and\u00a0an\u00a0olive branch in\u00a0the\u00a0other as\u00a0a\u00a0symbol of\u00a0peaceful policy: a\u00a0branch with 13 olives. My\u00a0question: has your eagle already eaten all the\u00a0olives leaving only the\u00a0arrows?\u201d<\/p>\n

Bolton\u2019s response: \u201cI didn\u2019t bring any olives.\u201d<\/p>\n
