{"id":39707,"date":"2018-10-26T06:35:21","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T11:35:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=39707"},"modified":"2018-10-26T06:35:21","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T11:35:21","slug":"tsa-announces-biometrics-vision-for-all-commercial-aviation-travelers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=39707","title":{"rendered":"TSA announces \u201cbiometrics vision for all commercial aviation travelers\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"post-header\">\n<h3 class=\"post-title entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/2018\/10\/15\/tsa-announces-biometrics-vision-for-all-commercial-aviation-travelers\/#more-12947\">TSA announces \u201cbiometrics vision for all commercial aviation travelers\u201d<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/biometrics-roadmap.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12951\" src=\"https:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/biometrics-roadmap-300x121.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/biometrics-roadmap-300x121.png 300w, https:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/biometrics-roadmap-768x309.png 768w, https:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/biometrics-roadmap-1024x412.png 1024w, https:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/biometrics-roadmap.png 1413w\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today the US Transportation Security Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/news\/releases\/2018\/10\/15\/tsa-releases-roadmap-expanding-biometrics-technology\">released<\/a> a detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/tsa_biometrics_roadmap.pdf\">TSA Biometric Roadmap for Aviation Security &amp; the Passenger Experience<\/a>, making explicit the goal of requiring mug shots (to be used for automated facial recognition and image-based surveillance and control) as a condition of all domestic or international air travel.<\/p>\n<p>This makes explicit the goal that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/2018\/10\/01\/yes-the-dhs-wants-mug-shots-of-all-air-travelers\/\">apparent, but only implicit<\/a>, in the activities and statements of both government agencies and airline and airport trade associations.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/tsa_biometrics_roadmap.pdf\">terrifyingly totalitarian vision<\/a> of pervasive surveillance of air travelers at, quite literally and deliberately, every step of their journey, enabled by automated facial recognition and by the seamless collaboration of airlines and airport operators that will help the government surveil their customers in exchange for free use of facial images for their own business purposes and profits.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 closest contemporary counterpart to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/tsa_biometrics_roadmap.pdf\">what the TSA envisions for the USA<\/a> is the pervasive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-09-18\/china-social-credit-a-model-citizen-in-a-digital-dictatorship\/10200278\">surveillance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-credit\/china-to-bar-people-with-bad-social-credit-from-planes-trains-idUSKCN1GS10S\">control<\/a> of travelers in China through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-all-seeing-surveillance-state-feared-in-the-west-is-a-reality-in-china-1498493020\">automated facial recognition<\/a> by the Public Security Bureau.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-12947\"><\/span>Automated surveillance of air travelers by the TSA will begin with people who have \u201cvoluntarily\u201d provided photos for other purposes such as background checks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the near term, TSA will deploy Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) to authenticate the security features of passengers\u2019 ID credentials and allow Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) to retrieve passenger pre-screening status in near-real time\u2026. In the future, TSA will be able to use TSA Pre<span class=\"tsa-pre-check-mark\">\u2713<\/span>\u00ae enrolled facial images for matching\u2026.
