{"id":39417,"date":"2018-10-20T08:01:24","date_gmt":"2018-10-20T13:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=39417"},"modified":"2018-10-20T08:01:24","modified_gmt":"2018-10-20T13:01:24","slug":"what-truckers-railroads-are-saying-about-the-us-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=39417","title":{"rendered":"What Truckers &#038; Railroads Are Saying About the US Economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/2018\/10\/18\/more-signs-the-blistering-boom-in-trucking-rail-has-peaked\/\">What Truckers &amp; Railroads Are Saying About the US Economy<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong>They\u2019re a measure of the goods-based economy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Freight shipment volume across all modes of transportation \u2013 truck, rail, air, and barge \u2013 rose 8.2% in September, compared to a year earlier, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cassinfo.com\/transportation-expense-management\/supply-chain-analysis\/transportation-indexes\/cass-freight-index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cass Freight Index<\/a>. While this is still a big jump, it\u2019s down from the five <em>double-digit<\/em> increases earlier this year. The index covers merchandise for the consumer and industrial economy but does not include bulk commodities, such as grains or chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows how the index changed from the same month a year earlier. Note the notorious cyclicality of the business, the peak increase in January of 12.5%, and the trend since then. It highlights the cyclicality in the business, including the \u201ctransportation recession\u201d in 2015 and 2016. The horizontal blue line (50) indicates equilibrium between demand for vans and capacity. Values above the line indicate demand exceeds capacity.
