Photo: IStock<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content sticky-sidebar-relative\">\n<div class=\"content-read-more\">\n<p>A crucial Pentagon <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2018\/Oct\/05\/2002048904\/-1\/-1\/1\/ASSESSING-AND-STRENGTHENING-THE-MANUFACTURING-AND%20DEFENSE-INDUSTRIAL-BASE-AND-SUPPLY-CHAIN-RESILIENCY.PDF\">report<\/a> on the US defense industrial base and \u201csupply chain resiliency\u201d bluntly accuses China of \u201cmilitary expansion\u201d and \u201ca strategy of economic aggression,\u201d mostly because Beijing is the only source for \u201ca number of chemical products used in munitions and missiles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russia is mentioned only once, but in a crucial paragraph: as a \u2013 what else \u2013 \u201cthreat,\u201d alongside China, for the US defense industry.<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon, in this report, may not be advocating total war against both Russia and China \u2013 as it was interpreted in some quarters. What it does is configure the trade war against China as even more incandescent, while laying bare the true motivations behind the sanctioning of Russia.<\/p>\n<p>The US Department of Commerce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2018\/09\/26\/2018-20954\/addition-of-certain-entities-to-the-entity-list-revision-of-an-entry-on-the-entity-list-and-removal\">has imposed restrictions<\/a>\u00a0on 12 Russian corporations that are\u00a0deemed to be <em>\u201c<\/em>acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the US<em>.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0In practice, this means that American corporations cannot export dual-use products to any of the sanctioned Russian companies.<\/p>\n<p>There are very clear reasons behind these sanctions \u2013 and they are not related to national security. It\u2019s all about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strategic-culture.org\/news\/2018\/09\/29\/its-the-economy-stupid-what-really-drives-us-sanctions-against-russia.html\">\u201cfree market\u201d<\/a>competition.<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of the storm is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qoJoRgWlC5Q\">Irkut MC-21<\/a> narrow-body passenger jet \u2013 the first in the world with a capacity of more than 130 passengers to have composite-based wings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aerocomposit.ru\/\">AeroComposit<\/a> is responsible for the development of these composite wings.
