Collins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peterbcollins.com\/\">show<\/a> to discuss his new article, exposing exaggerated claims of Russian skulduggery on Facebook in 2016.\u00a0<span id=\"more-18080\"><\/span>Porter\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"external external_icon\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2018\/10\/10\/the-shaky-case-that-russia-manipulated-social-media-to-tip-the-2016-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a>\u00a0was published last week at\u00a0<strong>Consortium News<\/strong>, showing inaccurate claims in the late-September\u00a0<a class=\"external external_icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/09\/20\/us\/politics\/russia-interference-election-trump-clinton.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recap of Russia-gate<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0reporters Scott Shane and Mark Mazzetti.<\/p>\n<p>Both Porter and your humble host consider Shane to be a credible reporter, and credit him with caveats in stories on Russia-gate, including the quote from the September 26 report that these claims \u201ccan neither be proven nor disproven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We note how many \u201cprogressive\u201d media figures, including Thom Hartmann, claim that Mueller\u2019s convictions and plea deals amount to proof of \u201ccollusion\u201d, even though Manafort and the others have not been tried on such charges.<\/p>\n<p>Porter explains that the numbers cited by the <em>Times<\/em> about Facebook are grossly exaggerated, with \u201cpotential impressions\u201d being treated as click-throughs.\u00a0 He notes that Facebook estimates that only 1 out of 10 posts in a news feed are actually read by the user.\u00a0 When you compare the modest traffic attributed to all Russians, including government actors, it\u2019s infinitesimal compared to the $80 million-plus the Trump campaign spent on dark-targeted Facebook ads.<\/p>\n<p>Porter also looks at the role of Twitter bots in amplifying tweets by the candidates, and argues that the impacts cited by Shane and Mazzetti are not significant.
