The scientists\u00a0warn that the Earth&#8217;s current warming climate could spark a similar drought, but even worse.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/footer>\n<div class=\"node__content\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>One of the lead researchers, Deepti Singh, a professor in WSU&#8217;s School of the Environment, used rainfall records and climate reconstruction models to characterize the environmental\u00a0conditions leading up to the Great Drought, a period in the mid-1870s known for\u00a0widespread crop failures across Asia, Brazil, and Africa. The drought was connected to the most extreme manifestation of the El Nino supercycle ever recorded.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-link-option=\"1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/Global%20Famine.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/Global%20Famine.jpg?itok=VH4hBffo 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"afc7316c-62dd-4e56-9a15-ed71709f0a60\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Climate conditions that caused the Great Drought and Global Famine arose from natural variability. And their recurrence &#8212; with hydrological impacts intensified by global warming &#8212; could again potentially\u00a0undermine global food safety,&#8221; lead author Singh and her colleagues\u00a0wrote in the Journal of Climate, published online Oct. 04.<\/p>\n<p>The release of the study came days before the UN Intergovernmental\u00a0Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that global warming could cause intense droughts, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.<\/p>\n<p>WSU says Global Famine was among the worst humanitarian disasters in modern time, comparable to the influenza epidemic\u00a0of 1918-1919, World War I and World War II.
