{"id":39248,"date":"2018-10-16T19:33:57","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T00:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=39248"},"modified":"2018-10-16T19:33:57","modified_gmt":"2018-10-17T00:33:57","slug":"un-climate-change-report-a-choice-between-mad-max-and-hunger-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=39248","title":{"rendered":"UN Climate Change Report: A Choice between \u201cMad Max and Hunger Games\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-about\">\n<h3 class=\"article-republish-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/articles\/un-climate-change-report-a-choice-between-mad-max-and-hunger-games\/\">UN Climate Change Report: A Choice between \u201cMad Max and Hunger Games\u201d<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"article-subtitle\">Humanity, we\u2019re essentially told, is doomed lest people concede their freedom to the experts, lawmakers, and bureaucrats who can save us.<\/div>\n<section class=\"hero article-detail hidden-print\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"zoom-default\" class=\"article-featured-img medium-zoom-image\" src=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/media\/31258\/climatechangedesolation.jpg?center=0.7425,0.46166666666666667&amp;mode=crop&amp;width=1920&amp;rnd=131840703100000000\" alt=\"\" \/><\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body-cont ng-isolate-scope\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text\">\n<p>The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) this week released a special report detailing all the ways climate change is predicted to wreak havoc on humans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/sr15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The report<\/a> is about 800 pages long, so I\u2019ll offer a summary to save you some time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Global temperatures today are 1.0\u00b0C above pre-industrial temperatures.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re seeing an increase in extreme weather and other negative consequences as a result of the increase, including receding sea ice in the Arctic and rising global sea levels.<\/li>\n<li>A 1.5\u00b0C increase will be (much) worse than a 1.0 increase; 2\u00b0C would be much worse than that.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re currently on track to exceed 3\u00b0C.<\/li>\n<li>Only broad and drastic changes in the world economy can prevent global calamity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report\u2019s glum findings were announced at a press conference by a United Nations panel in Incheon, South Korea. Panelists tried to sound optimistic, but there was no sugar-coating the report\u2019s key finding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you would like to stabilize global warming to 1.5\u00b0C, the key message is that net CO2 emissions at the global scale must reach zero by 2050,\u201d said panelist Valerie Masson-Delmotte, a French climate scientist and research director at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission. \u201cThat\u2019s the most important finding of the report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"rte-quote\">Barring these substantial reductions, we\u2019re told, millions will die.
